Overview

Whether your subject is mathematics, computer science, engineering or anything in between, our Global Markets Quantitative Analytics Internships offer the perfect insight to HSBC's quantitative businesses. If you are in your final or penultimate year of a PhD or Masters, or even if you've already finished your degree, now is the time to discover how your skills and interests can drive your career. On our internships, we'll give you a taste for how Quantitative Analytics roles sit within the world of Global Markets and our wider international bank. Our internships typically start in May and are between three and six months depending on the role and your availability.

What you can expect

You'll take part in a range of activities, projects and networking events. After an induction where you learn about our business, culture, and how we operate, you will join your team where you will become involved in a project that will allow you to further develop your quantitative skills in various application fields. This could be derivatives modelling, financial products engineering, risk management, algorithmic trading or data science and machine learning. You'll work with senior leaders and colleagues to bring quantitative solutions to our markets to serve our clients.

What you will do

As an intern, you'll be using the latest quantitative techniques with applications in markets derivatives, algorithmic trading operating in electronic markets, financial products engineering or large datasets analysis and machine learning.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience Needed

We are looking for dedicated, team-spirited and motivated people who are:

Committed researchers. We run a business where markets and client needs are constantly changing. You should always be curious; questioning ideas and showing a keen interest in learning about our methods

Agile workers. You'll work in a fast-paced environment. You'll maintain momentum by promoting agile working and ensuring we constantly deliver sound business solutions for our clients

Analytical thinkers. You'll need a good eye for detail, a creative mind for analysing trends, and the courage to adopt new analytical methods

Team players. At HSBC, we do things together so that we can deliver the best solutions for our clients. That means being dedicated and able to collaborate: to listen to, as well as voice ideas and opinions that could develop our offering to clients

The ideal candidate for this role will:
  • Have a minimum of a 2.1 honours degree or equivalent (predicted or gained), and 120 UCAS points or equivalent (excluding General Studies)
  • Studying for or graduated from a post graduate degree in a quantitative subject
  • Have good programming skills in a language such as Python
  • No direct experience is required for the role but any previous experience with transferable skills will be advantageous

What can this lead to?

If you succeed here, we'll consider you for a role within one of our Quantitative Analytics, Research or Data Science-driven teams. You could be placed into a more specialised position that suits your personality and skills, working alongside like-minded colleagues who share a passion for backing up client decisions with solid data.
