Recruitment Genius Ltd
Contract Type
Full Time
This company has developed a highly innovative, automated self-cleaning water intake screening system that is used in the hydropower and water utility industries. Previously the product has been managed as a side-line to the main consultancy business, but it now is attracting great interest and their order book is growing. The point has been reached where a dedicated manager and designer is needed to manage day-to-day operations and help grow the business.

This would be a very varied role, including desk-based 3D CAD design (they use Autodesk Inventor), hands-on manufacturing, control systems, management of the manufacturing process and suppliers and project management of the installation projects. In parallel the company needs to implement and develop some basic Health & Safety and Quality Assurance processes appropriate to the scale of the business, which the applicant would also be expected to lead.

The company is small so will attract people who like a bit of variation in their job. As the business grows the range of functions may shrink as more people get involved, though the aim is to recruit someone who wants to lead the business now, so there are good opportunities for career progression.

Their products are the highest quality in the marketplace and they pride themselves on being the best. They want applicants who want to produce the best designs and best products using innovation, the best materials and best components, while understanding that balance between cost and benefit - because at the end of the day the product needs to be competitively priced.

Applicants must be confident in their skills and be self-reliant and not need constant supervision. You must want to manage your own workload and welcome new challenges. The job is mainly office-based with some time (10 to 20%) in the workshop. It isn't essential, but the applicant could get involved in site visits for sales and site work during installation if they had the skills and were interested.

As this is a primarily a design and management role, the applicant should have a good understanding of 'real world' engineering, which may be reflected in good practical skills, learnt either in previous roles or through hobbies. They are more interested in experience and skills, though having those supported by an engineering degree of BTEC or similar would always help.

They are a commercial business that survives through making a profit, so the applicant must be commercially aware and have that ability to know what needs doing to keep the customer happy and get the product out of the door and not get distracted. Some people struggle with this, some people thrive on it. Clearly they want to recruit people in the latter category.

Their office if located in a beautiful watermill in the Stroud valley, so is ideal for someone who likes to work in a pleasant environment. The office and staff are a friendly collaborative group so they are looking for someone who fits in well with that ethos.
