Assistant Laboratory Manager
Soil Engineering is one of the UK’s leading geotechnical contractors with a proven capability in all elements of ground investigation and stabilisation.
To complement and strengthen our existing laboratory team we are looking to recruit an Assistant Laboratory Manager to assist in the management of all laboratory testing undertaken by the Leeds laboratory of Soil Engineering.
The Assistant Lab Manager is required to help manage the lab resources (technicians and other employees, together with laboratory testing equipment) on a day to day basis.
Key Tasks:
* To assist the Laboratory Manager in managing all work within the laboratory
* To deputise for the Laboratory Manager in their absence, or as workload dictates
* Engage closely with all laboratory staff, supervise them, perform audits, assessments and appraisals
* Perform inductions for new laboratory staff
* Provide effective management of all laboratory staff on a daily basis To ensure that testing is undertaken in accordance with relevant standards
* Train and supervise processing data technician(s) Help maintain the laboratory’s quality management system.
* Maintain up to date record / knowledgebase of all testing standards and new / proposed standards.
* Process, check and approve laboratory test data.
* Maintain good working levels of consumables throughout laboratory
* Investigate reporting queries and errors
* Be proactive in meeting contract deadlines and seek full completion of contracts.
* Liaise with lab employees and external laboratories to chase up outstanding testing.
* Report any testing or equipment discrepancies to Lab Manager
* Help maintain the laboratory’s health and safety procedures, including COSHH and fire records.
* Ensure good housekeeping and control of archive records.
Ancillary Tasks:
* Responsibility for Health & Safety issues relating to the lab premises and lab employees.
* Represents company at Trade organisations (e.g. AGS) as appropriate / required.
Knowledge and experience required:
* Able to perform all sample preparation.
* In depth knowledge of all routine soil tests, particularly classification, strength, earthworks & settlement.
* Ability to manage both individual and groups of technicians.
* Experience in managing testing from numerous projects and prioritising work.
* Experience of dealing with internal and external clients.
* Ability to communicate with both internal employees and external clients / other testing laboratories.
Physical Working Environment:
Working within the Leeds laboratory. The successful candidate will spend a significant amount of time each day walking around the laboratory to manage the lab technicians and when required undertakes testing in different areas of the lab. Some areas of the laboratory may be dusty and/or noisy when testing is in progress.
This is a full time role, 37.5 hours per week. Monday to Frida, 08:30 till 17:00 (1 hour unpaid lunch break).
