Northampton General Hospital

Consultant Physician in Elderly Medicine (Permanent position)

Full time or Job share

Northampton General Hospital is looking for an enthusiastic and forward thinking Consultant in Geriatric Medicine to join and help develop the successful service that the Trust provides. This is an exciting opportunity for the new team member to join our well located DGH at a time when the department is changing practice throughout the hospital. We are looking to develop new areas of working so candidates with special interests will be accommodated and supported as much as possible.

This is for a new full time appointment to join the existing 2 full time geriatricians, 4 stroke physicians, one locum orthogeriatrician, and one community geriatrician.

The Department of Medicine for the Elderly is well established with clinicians’ designed wards, outpatients and therapy support within the acute hospital setting.

The Department of Medicine for the Elderly currently provides specialist elderly care services for Stroke, Falls, Syncope, Orthogeriatrics and Movement disorders at the Northampton General Hospital site.

There are plenty of opportunities for a new colleague to develop new service ( for example peri-operative geriatric care etc) and to improve existing service to maintain our successful service.

This is an exciting time for Northampton General Hospital as we are establishing a service for frail elderly patients on Emergency Medical assessment unit. Current service consists of two Specialist Nurses for Elderly Medicine to carry out Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment within 24-hours of admission to Medical assessment units. They are supported by dedicated sessions of trust grade Registrar and Community Geriatrician. They identify suitable patients for multidisciplinary team assessment on two admission units to enable prompt and safe discharges. This service also identifies appropriate patients for 2 short stay elderly wards which are managed by Geriatricians.

The post will include an acute medicine component, joining the 15 physicians on an acute medicine on call rota (additional 1 PA).

Possession of MRCP or equivalent qualification is essential and applicants must be holders of a CCT in acute medicine and/or general internal medicine and geriatric or be within 12 months of obtaining such a CCT.

Further information can be obtained from Dr Pad Boovalingam, Consultant Stroke Physician and Clinical Director for Elderly, Stroke and outpatient specialities 01604 545946 or Dr. Michaela Ene Lead Consultant, Medicine for the Elderly 01604 544565 . Candidates are welcome to visit the department.

To deliver best possible care for our patients:

  • We put patient safety above all else

  • We aspire to excellence

  • We reflect, we learn, we improve

  • We respect and support each other

Tier 2 Certificate of Sponsorship

Applications from job seekers who require Tier 2 sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. However, non-EEA candidates may not be appointed to a post if a suitably qualified, experienced and skilled EU/EEA candidate is available to take up the post as the employing body is unlikely, in these circumstances, to satisfy the Resident Labour Market Test. For further information please visit the UK Visas and Immigration website.

From 6 April 2017, Tier 2 skilled worker applicants, applying for entry clearance into the UK, must present a criminal record certificate from each country they have resided continuously or cumulatively for 12 months or more in the past 10 years.
