Eden Scott's client is one of the UK's largest Higher Education institutions and they have created a new Corporate Development team with a focus on driving improved commercial performance within the organisation. Main Responsibilities The key challenges of the role encompass the diversity of initiatives that you will be asked to support, the short timescales that you may often be required to operate to, the complex environment which you will need to understand during planning and delivery of workload. The role has the potential to be across any combination of the Colleges and Corporate Services functions together with interface to the extensive City Deal programme. Industry engagement will be significant part of your role. At the moment there are 3 main areas to be developed; Existing commercial development portfolio where the focus is to ensure the delivery of core assets for the University and that any partnership approach is commercially viable for these projects and will meet key strategic objectives. Venture Funding: The University needs to progress its ability to identify and source funding opportunities to commercialise IP opportunities arising from research activities that are core to the University's strategic agenda, Core to this is to enable spin-out of IP into commercially viable companies through accessing suitable venture funding opportunities across the investment cycle. The University is developing its strategic approach to Venture Funding with appropriate diligence required across such opportunities. City Deal: The University is establishing a core Programme Management Office for the extensive programme of activities associated with the delivery of the City Deal. The Corporate Development team will work closely with the Programme Management Office to ensure that corporate development matters, including appropriate due diligence considerations, associated with the City Deal activities are progressed in a co-ordinated way. For all of these projects they need to attract investor funding, financially model successful outcomes and generally provide strong commercial and corporate finance input to deliver strong outcomes in these projects. These roles will be recruited for on a Fixed Term Contract basis initially for a period of 12 months. Knowledge, Skills and Experience Needed for the Job Candidate requirements; Candidates can be Chartered Accountants, CFA Qualified or in instances where there are no formal qualifications a demonstrably strong track record in Corporate Finance, Corporate Development or Business Advisory. Strong experience gained in: Corporate Finance, Corporate Development, Restructuring, Recovery, Transaction Services, Business Case Management or other "financial advisory" disciplines is a must. Ideally you will have strong experience in delivering due diligence assignments including scoping of work programmes through to delivering concluding reports. Alternatively strong demonstrable experience in delivering investment appraisals or business review assignments is desirable. Well-honed Financial Modelling skills and using Excel to build strong financials and justifications which will be used for investors, internal purposes and keeping up to date with project milestones. Being able to write VBA macros from scratch is an advantage. Very strong problem solving skills including a demonstrable ability to use both intuition and solid financial information and non-financial considerations to achieve outcomes which are commercially successful. You will also need to be able to adapt to a rapidly changing environment and be adept at managing broad spectrum of projects simultaneously. You will need to have a very strong appreciation for managing, manipulating and making sense of large data-sets which you can then translate into "plain-speak" for a non-technical audience. In addition to the technical skills required you will need to have very polished communication and report writing skills in both written, spoken and presentation forms. You will have gravitas and the personality needed to build positive relationships internally and externally including at the highest seniority in the University and with external stakeholders. We need someone who is experienced enough to take full-ownership of the projects assigned and to be a self-starter who solves problems on their own initiative. The successful candidate will be an excellent team player, both with direct colleagues but also in their ability to establish good working relationships with colleagues in a virtual/project environment. You will recognise difficult challenges but not be daunted by them and be able to work autonomously but know when to engage senior colleagues, the ability to break down challenges into smaller steps whilst maintaining a strategic perspective is important, with the ability to prioritise actions being a core skill.
