Every time you hit a switch, a power station has to work a little harder, burning more coal or gas. Unfortunately, the sun won’t shine more brightly just because we want to use renewables! We therefore need to be smarter about how and when we use energy.

With this in mind, Upside created a platform that allows everyone to make smarter decisions when consuming power and contribute directly to building a low-carbon energy system. Our software engineers are developing a cloud platform (Java, Spring, AWS, Docker, Kubernetes) that uses advanced algorithms and AI to coordinate electrical devices that households and businesses already own to match demand for energy with available supply. They are really, really bright people who care.

We are hiring someone permanently to help us improve our responsiveness and create a more appealing look and feel to our customer portals. Your work will make it much easier for our customers to see the impact of our service from an economic and environmental perspective.

This job is for you if you:

Can show off some (ideally lots of) experience in UI development and all things Javascript
Feel strongly about good architecture, modular, reusable and quality driven coding practives
Want to work in a highly agile development environment
Want to be involved with technical discussions around new developments and be able to recommend implementations.
Want to join a company that regularly wins awards for it’s innovation
Enjoy solving problems and love taking on difficult challenges
Love learning new things, and you can learn quickly
Thrive in a culture that fosters collaboration and original thinking
Have bags of talent, energy and passion to help shape the future

A bit more about us:

We were created in response to a challenge run by the National Grid. Since then we’ve won a LOT of awards for low carbon innovation and received over £2.4m grant funding from Innovate UK. Further funding from £1.2m seed equity and £5.5m from a Series A funding round that we closed in December ‘17, we are about to realise our vision for a newer, cleaner and more equitable energy system.

There’s 28 of us in Manchester and we’re doubling in size this year which makes it a genuinely exciting time to join us. So, if you’re going to take ownership of the time you spend with us and truly make a difference then send an email to shaunr@upsideenergy.co.uk and he’ll get in touch to tell you more about what, when and how we are doing things.
