Department overview: The Data Platform Engineering team are responsible for designing, validating, automating and enhancing the data platforms used within IHS Markit. These platforms deliver data, our primary commodity, to world leading institutions in the finance, telecommunications, energy, defence, transportation, and automotive industries. Our customer base represents 85% of the Fortune Global 500. Position summary The successful candidate will get the opportunity to.. be IHS Markit's SQL Server engineering SME drive the SQL Server strategy platform for an S&P 500 company work alongside motivated people keen and able to make a difference solve interesting and challenging problems help drive IHS Markit's migration to the public cloud collaborate with developers to convert SQL Server's capabilities into business value get experience of the latest hardware and software versions Primarily a SQL Server focused role, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to the delivery of all supported data platforms. IHS Markit is also experimenting with Open Source DBMSs such as MySQL and PostgreSQL, and Big Data technologies including HDFS, Hadoop, HBase, Spark, Ignite, Elasticsearch, Kafka, and more to handle new data sets and drive value through analytics. Duties & accountabilities An IHS Markit SQL Server engineer designs, communicates, and executes on the company's SQL Server strategy. Their day will be varied, and can include one or more of the following tasks: Delivering services more quickly and to a higher quality using approaches such as Infrastructure as code Continuous Integration Automation Orchestration Proposing, or reviewing, new features & technologies, then influencing adoption. Design of shared and dedicated database platforms to maximise availability and performance while minimising cost Integrating databases and data platforms with supporting technologies - monitoring, management, security, compliance Testing new versions of databases and data platforms, and different combinations of hardware and software (functional & performance) Helping others understand SQL Server to maximise successful adoption Requirements gathering - we build what the business needs Core technology roadmap delivery & maintenance Design & documentation of core technology standards & policies Developing core technology build instructions & training Design of standard operating procedures for core technologies - backup, recovery, patch, upgrade, clone, HA, DR, capacity management Testing existing database and data platform technologies on new software versions (E.g. Windows Server, firmware) and hardware platforms (E.g. server, storage, cloud) Complex incident and problem resolution (tier 3 support), including application and infrastructure performance problem investigations Improving software licence utilisation & management Business competencies Education and experience IHS Markit are more interested in candidates who can demonstrate the right approach, attitude, and experience to achieve the types of duties and accountabilities listed above than any specific technical skills or academic achievements. That said, it is most likely that the successful candidate will have a deep understanding of SQL Server and the hardware and technology that underpins it, or facilitates its successful adoption, and will be able to demonstrate that they can apply that knowledge in the support of a large, rapidly evolving SQL Server estate. To be successful in this role a candidate should be conversant in at least half of the following areas: Installing and configuring SQL Server Administering SQL Server Designing secure SQL Server implementations and operational procedures Reducing delivery times and increasing quality and consistency through task automation and orchestration Designing SQL Server and supporting infrastructure and processes for high availability, disaster recovery, scalability, and performance Ensuring sufficient capacity for SQL Server through appropriate measurement and forecasting SQL Server licensing, including an understanding of how this is influenced by Software Agreements & Software Assurance Applying an understanding of the SQL Server Query Optimizer and database design best practices (partitioning, indexing, etc) to help developers write efficient and well performing applications Leveraging SQL Server performance features (e.g. Dynamic Management Views) to reduce response times or increase throughput for key business processes, both proactively and reactively In addition, hands-on experience of, or a willingness and ability to learn about, the following will be beneficial: Design, implementation, and usage of SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS), and SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) Amazon Web Services VMWare vRealize/VMWare vRealize Orchestrator Development & monitoring tools. For example Redgate, Idera, SQL Sentry, and Solarwinds System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) - Package creation, management System Center - Orchestrator - Runbook creation, management Data protection technologies. For example, Idera, Quest (Dell), NetBackup, Commvault, Actifio, NetApp AltaVault, or similar Storage/database cloning technologies - Actifio, Delphix, etc Developing budgets, and influencing financial spend Commercial awareness It would be advantageous if candidates can describe how they would estimate the cost of delivering a technology service, including software licencing, hardware or cloud purchases, maintenance costs, and human effort costs. The successful candidate will therefore be able to write clear, concise documentation that can be followed by people of all experience levels and explain often complex topics to anyone from a junior developer to a CTO.
