JOB DESCRIPTION Employee: Job Title: Underwriter Level of Authority None Limited Full Underwriting x Claims x Reinsurance x Staff x Financial/Contractual x Development x Personal Responsibilities: · Ensure growth of good-quality business through underwriting in accordance with the business plan & reinsurance agreements. · Referral review of more complex underwriting cases involving more junior staff · Ensure underwriting files are properly maintained and accurately updated as necessary. · Liaise closely with the Business Development Manager/Business Development Executives to ensure commonality of objectives and activities is maintained. Support the development of acceptable brokers / intermediaries where the need arises; · Provide an excellent service to our customers which meets Corporate expectations · Handle business from enquiry, through quotation, acceptance, inputting, renewal and any associated queries and endorsements. · Actively seeks feedback from customers in an effort to improve customer service · Actively research changes within the marketplace and any forthcoming product developments · Ensuring that the work carried out is compliant with Corporate Policies, and meets Corporate Objectives in respect of Contract Certainty and Treating Customers Fairly · Referral review of claims cases, as part of our Internal Audit arrangements · Make efficient use of company systems such as the Acturis system and Microsoft Office tools in the workplace · Active involvement in any project teams set up to deal with specific IT systems requirements and projects; regular consideration / championing of business improvements · Development and mentoring of more junior employees through technical referrals and decisions, supervision of their activities. Previous Experience/Education: As per CV Attached Role Function: · As part of the Underwriting team managed by the Underwriting Manager, the Underwriter is responsible for the development of the EC Insurance Group’s main business accounts through brokers, and also with contractors and similar commercial clients from allied trades, where the customer comes to us direct. · The Underwriter will accept business on behalf of ECIC; where this is not appropriate, the Underwriter will use ECIC’s sister company, ECIS, to place business with other insurance companies. Knowledge Required: · ACII / FCII qualified, or close to completion. · Good degree standard, "A"-level qualifications, and passes at GCSE / "O"-level in Mathematics and English. · Any further relevant technical / managerial, professional qualifications obtained. Skills Required: · Detailed understanding of the insurance market, basic insurance principles and practices (e.g. proposal forms, contract certainty), and the ability to apply them in less predictable circumstances. Able to advise customers and brokers; · Detailed understanding (built on at least 6-years' insurance experience in a suitable insurance broking or company environment within the UK market) of the Contractors insurance market, its insurance products and rating procedures, as well as the impact of risk exposure and risk management on acceptance · Understanding of the other main insurance classes: principally, Commercial Combined, Property Damage and Business Interruption, Accident, General Liability, Warranty and Motor Vehicles. · Understanding of reinsurance arrangements used to manage portfolio underwriting and single risk exposures. · Understanding of more complex legal, regulatory and compliance principles and issues affecting customers and the contract of insurance (e.g. conflicts of interest, DPA, money laundering, client money rules, ToBA’s, TCF, FOS, market agreements). · Understanding of factors affecting capital adequacy requirements and insurer ratings. Able to understand how this affects customer choice and market security and provide clear explanations to customers · Understanding of claims principles processes and practice. Able to communicate this understanding both internally and externally · Able to understand the issues and concerns of customers and brokers and anticipate their needs and requirements · Able to analyse data, demonstrate understanding of insurance performance measures (e.g. loss and combined ratios, return on capital) and create effective business related reports · Some awareness of financial reporting (balance sheet and profit and loss accounts), particularly where relevant to the management of client risk · Able to identify and work in accordance with the values and corporate philosophy in operation throughout the organisation · Experienced and effective in people management, with strong relationship management, communication, presentation and negotiation skills; · Able to effectively plan and organise workload to meet business timescales; know and understand the value of record keeping for personal development, business requirements, industry regulation, systems and controls; · MS Office capabilities across software applications such as Excel, Word & PowerPoint.
