A business based in Manchester City Centre are looking for a Senior Software Engineer, who will be a key member of a growing hardware and software engineering team that are developing the next generation of point of care medical diagnostic device. The embedded engineer will be working closely with life scientists and will play a leading role in embedded software improvement and onward development to support existing and future product portfolio within the diagnostic healthcare market.

As a Senior Software Engineer you will have proven experience in the design, commit, deploy and maintenance of embedded C# and C-based applications for use in highly regulated environments.

The teams are formed of electronic and software engineers, product developers, industrial designers, scientists and operations staff covering the full spectrum of in vitro diagnostic medical device lifecycle from initial concept through to commercial product support.

A typical day will involve:

* Working with and improving existing C and/or C# code on 2x ARM9 processors.

* Build new software content, GUI features and peripheral device support for the instrument.

* Optimise applications to increase performance, reliability and supportability.

* Debug and troubleshoot software/hardware problems for internal and external users.

* Collaborate with electronic engineers and life scientists in all aspects of software product design, development and functional validation activities.

* You will be comfortable working with and documenting complex embedded C code (embedded C# is highly useful), identifying legacy and streamlining its performance to better support new feature building and supportability.

* Be comfortable working in test data driven, regulated software development environment.

* Enjoy collaborative technical problem solving.

* Be proactive, positive and professional in attitude.

To be successful in this very hands-on developer role, you must be able to demonstrate significant industry experience in:

* Embedded C

* Design and implementation of software on an RTS using object-oriented methodology

* Code debugging in a real-time/embedded environment

* Previously held a senior or project-leading software developer position

Desirable skills and experience

* C#

* GUI design and coding

* Programming for 32-bit processors.

* Code review and documentation

* Bare-metal programming

* Development of hardware emulation/ software testing applications

* Multi-processor debugging

* C++, Qt, Android useful but not essential

* Developing code using recognised methodology: Agile, Waterfall etc.

* Medical IVD hardware/ software development


This is a full time role (37.5 hours a week), based at the central Manchester Head Office in the centre of Manchester's healthcare and biotech hub. There is scope for occasional remote/flexible working although the collaborative and test-driven nature of our work requires our developers to be intimately embedded within the core of our development team in the Manchester office.

The Company is launching an affordable Hepatitis C Test platform in Africa. Hepatitis C (HCV) is a hidden, killer infection. Worldwide it is estimated that upwards of 80 million people are infected with HCV - which can lead to liver cancer and cirrhosis if left untreated. The simple HCV test can be undertaken outside of a traditional hospital setting and without the need for specialist knowledge or data interpretation. It could change lives as it gives populations in low to middle - income countries the means to test for infection and to then treat with effective and affordable anti- viral medication.

The business has also developed a similar test for Tuberculosis (MTB). Our platform is also used by the U.S Department of Defence in relation to Bio-Defence.
