Head of Platform Engineering

Location: Paddington, London

Permanent: £100 - £120,000.00

Overall Role Purpose:
Our client is re-shaping and evolving and now are looking to recruit a Head of Platform Engineering who will be responsible for the leadership and strategy of our client’s technical teams delivering its core platform service.

Our client is on a long-term journey to deliver a new consolidated global service, building on their world- leading regional ground transportation services. In support of this; it is restructuring all its combined product, software and engineering functions to operate a Spotify ‘Squads & Chapters’ delivery model.

Main Responsibilities:

* The development strategy for Platform & Services – tools, processes and frameworks.

* Leadership and line management of the development, testing and DevOps resource (internal and external).

* Mentoring and development of key relationships both internal and external.

* Commercial management of the near and off-shore development partners.

* Budgetary and commercial management (resource, licences).

* Quality of delivery across the Product squads.

What is critical for success?

Effective leadership of the teams, including onsite and offsite development.

Working closely with the IT Executive team.

Setting and evolving the technical strategy.

Building the long-term Squads & Chapters working culture.

Attributes / Experience Required:


Experience leading and delivering core platform services in previous roles.

Familiar with Mule software.

In-depth experience of software development.

In-depth experience of working with near-shore and/or off-shore development teamps.

Commercial understanding around contract law and licencing negotiations.

Good general understanding of commercial operations, budgets and governance.

Experience of refactoring and migrating legacy applications.

Good understanding of implementing API based services (SOA) architecture,

Experience of developing and implementing a development strategy.

Structured approach to problem solving.


Formal training on software development.

Experience of software development.

Experience of software development using .net frameworks.

Experience of working with Cloud services (AWS, Azure or other).

Knowledge of DevOps toolsets and best practice.

Experience of the both B2B and B2C digital propositions and solutions.

The chosen Soft Engineering Manager will have experience scaling technical solutions, working with Cloud Services and knowledge DevOps tools and best practice.


Occasional Travel to our client’s offices in Peterborough, Heathrow & Mahwah (NJ,USA).

Occasional travel to development partners in Eastern Europe.

Primarily based in the Paddington, London office.
