Mail Newspapers Technology is the Information Technology provider for media companies within the DMGT Group (Daily Mail & General Trust). We are seeking a suitable candidate to join our 3rd Line Infrastructure Team. It is desirable the candidate will have a wide range of Infrastructure related skills and have worked within a large corporate IT environment with a large complex technology deployment.

The Infrastructure Team are responsible for key underpinning technologies including Unix/VMware/Web Tech (AWS)/Oracle/SQL. You will become part of a team of permanent staff sometimes working alongside external resources for key projects and deliverables aligning to strategy. The role will report into the Head of Core & Cloud Technology Services.

Role Description & Responsibilities

The candidate will have predominant skill set in UNIX with a scripting background and associated technologies within an enterprise infrastructure. Proven record in supporting production environments in a very fast-paced company spread across geographic locations. Role is based out of our head office in Kensington, London. A minimum of 3-5 years in a similar capacity is expected. The candidate will be an excellent communicator, methodical and well-motivated. They will possess the ability to ensure set objectives are delivered within tight timescales and with proven results in an ITIL driven environment where key production services need to remain stable and efficient at all times. We are looking for a well-drilled individual, flexible in approach to diverse tasks and a very broad, yet in-depth, understanding of many infrastructure related technologies. The candidate will;
  • Provide technology leadership and subject matter expertise, while at the same time being a team player.
  • Have the ability to manage upwards and field questions from senior and line management while managing expectations accordingly.
  • Be qualified and hold certificates/qualification in popular flavours of Unix.
  • Have an understanding of VMware and AWS cloud IASS solutions.
  • Be a competent scripter in one or more popular languages. (Shell/Python/Pear/Java)
  • Act as a technical escalation point for the technologies to resolve issues swiftly, and find root cause to better improve the service(s)
  • Have a proven track record in supporting large production environments spanning geographic locations across a number of systems and internet connections.
  • Have supported and transformed a number of key solutions whilst looking to improve or modernise via re-platforming.
  • Understand and work towards a strategy set out by senior management ensuring we adhere to direction and execute tasks based on priority to meet strategy deadlines.
  • Have an understanding of all elements, which can make up an AWS Web deployment. (Chef/Puppet/Cloud formation/CMS/Apache/cloud front etc.)
  • Have the drive to constantly improve and try out new technology offerings from AWS plugins/solutions.
  • Will have very strong ITIL driven focus around our incident, request, change and problem processes both adhering to this process and ensuring the team are compliant also.
  • Have a good understanding of the need to be proactive by way of performance monitoring, tuning and pre-empting service improvements before they become an issue.
  • Be an escalation point for production threatening incidents, priority one or major issues and must have a proven track record in dealing with 3rd/4th line support along with working closely or dealing with partners and 3rd party vendors
  • Be a customer focused individual and fully understand that there needs to be a balance between the technical side, and customer communication be it fellow colleagues or people within the business.
  • Have the ability to coach other staff through various tasks and provide constant direction, namely 2nd line support teams and project technical leads.
  • Be flexible when it comes to out of hours support during evening and weekends which would require expertise beyond the duty service team where necessary.
Technical Skills

  • In depth knowledge of Unix flavour O/S (Certifications or proven history/experience in Solaris or Redhat)
  • Good understanding of VMware.
  • Good understanding and ability to manage/provision AWS environments from test to staging to production environments. (Predominately VPC/RDS/MYSQL/Wordpress/Cloud Formation/Cloudfront technologies)
  • Automation experience in managing cloud environments via Jenkins and Ansible.
  • Experience in deploying and administering WordPress CMS.
  • Good understanding of an integrated Private cloud (Storage/VMware/Networking)
  • Scripting knowledge and ability to take on new languages as required for supporting housekeeping/automation/integration/self-healing/deployment in a public or private cloud and/or physical on premise environment.
  • Performance analysis and tuning using built-in analysers to best practices highlighting issues and bottle necks.
  • Excellent understanding in high availability, backup and DR approaches/processes.
  • Able to produce capacity analysis and reporting.
  • A proven track record in a 3rd line support capacity with good understanding of processes like incident, request, change and problem (ITIL).
  • Architectural design and strategic planning
  • Oracle/SQL experience
  • Any scale out NON-SQL DB virtual technology
  • Project experience & transformational experience on a wide scale
  • Networking expertise (TCP/IP/DNS/Troubleshooting Server to WAN or Server To LAN issues)
  • Experience of publishing/media industry
  • Java/Jboss background
  • Storage Administration (EMC/Cisco Fabric)
  • Windows Administration (Relevant Certification or proven history/experience)
  • Any experience in the following tools; Tenable IO, Alertlogic, Newrelic, Apache, Nginx, LDAP, SCOM, Solarwinds, ATD/TIE, Mcafee suite of products, EMC Networker/Datadomain
  • Any experience with SAAS or IAAS peripheral solutions from Microsoft or AWS
Further Responsibilities
  • Investigating and resolving incidents assigned to the infrastructure services team and ensuring incidents are closed in a timely fashion to meet defined IT Services Levels
  • Ensuring in house knowledge documentation is kept up to date
  • Providing clear, accurate and timely updates to the customer with the progress of any incident resolution
  • Providing the IT Helpdesk with information about incidents and problems to assist with the identification and tracking of common and re-occurring issues
  • The planning and delivery of all patches, maintenance releases and all major product enhancement releases to infrastructure components, ensuring changes to the infrastructure are managed by following the Change Management process to ensure that the live environment is protected at all times.
  • Ensure adherence to all IT policies, architectural standards and guidelines, operational processes and procedures including relevant build and security standards
  • Identifying and managing key risks within Infrastructure Services
Other Information


The candidate must be flexible to travel (infrequently) to and work from any of our offices around the UK mainland where required. Locations of operations is centred in London, with presence in Ireland, Scotland, New York, Los Angeles and Sydney.

The IT team is required to work flexible hours to ensure systems are fully operational at all times required by the business. This may include evening and weekend work where necessary which is usually planned. Some call outs may happen at short notice via out Duty Shift Team that is 24/7.
