Role purpose and overview

The Telegraph is looking for a talented and dynamic individual to lead its editorial search engine optimisation team, ensuring content - whether written, video, or otherwise - is performing at its best in search engines. The role will focus on getting the most out of what the newsroom publishes and thinking originally about how we can improve in the promotion of live and long-term content, working with respective teams to do so, while leading our search strategy and adapting it to algorithm changes

Key responsibilities
  • Developing and leading Telegraph's editorial SEO strategy, with a focus on bringing more of the Telegraph's journalism to more potential subscribers through search engines
  • Overseeing the live and evergreen SEO teams and managing the overlap between the two areas
  • Attending editorial conferences and other newsroom meetings to help inform senior editors not only of the latest trends but those that will be important to a Telegraph reader and help shape what is commissioned
  • Working with digital editors to ensure publishing teams are abreast of the latest SEO advice - and that they are using it when commissioning and publishing
  • Keeping up to date with changes in Google News and web search algorithms
  • Working with the technical SEO lead to the scope and prioritise technical changes
  • Using analytics to measure the department's performance, daily, weekly, and monthly, and responding to that by enacting any changes necessary

Essential skills required for the role
  • Extensive knowledge of SEO and how to use data to make informed publishing decisions
  • Strong news sense and knowledge of the news agenda and current affairs
  • Ability to respond well under pressure and adhere to deadlines
  • Experience of managing people
  • Confidence to approach desk editors with how they should be using SEO
  • Skilled in use of tracking tools, Google Trends and Google Search Console
  • Knowledge of technical SEO (desirable)
