Telent Apprentice Telecoms Field Engineer

Role Profile

As a Telecoms Field Engineer apprentice, you will work in partnership with some of the biggest names in the telecommunications field, from BT to Talk-Talk, to updating infrastructure for RNLI and the London Ambulance Service.

Your apprentice experience will consist of a variety of different rotations throughout our business unit aimed at progressing your skills, knowledge and your personal development. You will gain a valuable insight to the inner workings of various departments across Telent Network Services.

You will learn the specifics behind networks and the intricacy of installing these into a working environment. This is an exciting role with great opportunities to progress your career in the telecommunication industry.

Typical Deliverables

Throughout the apprenticeship you will learn all the aspects of becoming a skilled Telecoms Engineer. This will include:

How to install and test on site equipment
How to work with Optical Fibre including cable preparation, splicing
How to test Optical Fibre, specifically OCDR testing and how to interoperate the results
How to work with copper cable such as termination at MDF, Co-axial cable termination and CAT 5 termination
All about IP routers and networks
All about our legacy systems such as System X, SDH and ISDX
How to test and commission a vast array of products
To work in lots of environments such as office, outdoors, BT exchanges, data centres and emergency service locations.
The requirements of the different customers and contracts and how to fulfil those needs
How to complete risk assessments
How to work within a highly skilled, UK wide field force building knowledge and skills


The Telent field force work UK wide and travel as a key and necessary part of being a field engineer. Even as an apprentice you will travel throughout the country and stay away from home to ensure you learn as much as you can throughout the scheme. This will allow you to work across a variety of different projects within our Network Services Team. So be prepared to travel as part of this role.

The Specifics

The apprenticeship is Typically 18-24 months in duration
On completion of the scheme, you will have a Level 3 Information Communications Technician qualification
Starting salary of £14,000 which will increase throughout the duration of the apprenticeship
You will work with us and our chosen training provider Intequal
You will also gain industry recognised vendor certifications alongside the standard qualification
On completion you will be a fully qualified Telent field engineer and can integrate into the full-time workforce
The apprenticeship is a managed scheme with a mix between apprenticeship portfolio work, classroom & virtual classroom learning, onsite shadowing and vendor exams
This role will work regionally so a vehicle will be provided to enable you to travel to undertake this apprenticeship

The Requirements:

5 GCSEs grades 9 to 4. Specifically, in Maths, English and Science or an IT related subject (A*
to C)
Full UK Driving licence would be essential for the role
Be 18 Years old from September 2022
Be able to pass Security Clearance.
Have normal colour vision and hearing
Be able to work at heights
