We are recruiting for our Higher education client based in Uxbridge.

Role: Buildings and Facilities Assistant

Pay: £11.37 per hour

Hours: 9am to 5pm

Duration: Temporary - ongoing (starting asap)

The role:

Support Commercial Services in achieving departmental and University aims and objectives, and undertake general maintenance activities. Maintain a common standard of Residences maintenance service relating to the upkeep of University premises which will include all aspects of mandatory compliance, Health and Safety and PPM (preventative planned maintenance). Support the department in achieving service delivery working within university and departmental policies and procedures. They will ensure that servicing and repairs are carried out appropriately in a timely fashion or in keeping with agreed SLAs (Service Level Agreements). The post holder will join an established skilled team within the Residences Department of Commercial Services.

The post holder will be part of a team ensuring that appropriate systems and procedures are followed to meet health and safety duties and responsibilities contained within the University's Health and Safety policy. In particular they will ensure that they adhere to appropriate risk assessments including COSHH regulations in respect of potential hazards.

The Residences Department predominantly provides accommodation for students throughout the academic year as well as conference and corporate guests during the summer months.

Main Duties

Communication, Team work and Motivation: To participate in an on-going training programme as well as any mandatory training & any other appropriate training as directed by the University.

To provide clear and effective information to students when attending residences, directing students as and when required by verbal commands on a daily basis.

To fulfil legal requirements of critical Health and Safety / Mandatory inspection, and testing regimes, e.g. fire alarm testing, fire extinguisher checks, Emergency Light Testing, Legionella flushing/sampling, lux levels, asbestos condition reporting, PAT Testing. In accordance with the UUK Code of Practice for the Management of Student Housing.

To follow University Health and Safety guidelines, specifically the asbestos register, COSHH, and ensure they are wearing correct Uniform and PPE before completing any maintenance work within Residences.

Service Delivery, Liaison and Networking, Planning and Organising Resources, Decision Making Processes and Outcomes: To provide clear and effective information to supervisors and staff throughout the University, receiving information verbally, by radio, telephone or electronically, providing simple feedback to the relevant supervisors and staff either by verbal or electronic communication and using University electronic systems (e.g. KX, Planon, Zetasafe on a daily basis. Maintaining accurate written and electronic records including the use of digital and electronic systems and tablet / PDA devices for all work carried out on a daily basis.

To ensure that security within Residences is maintained for student's staff and contractors, following the University procedures. Repairing and maintaining all security and access systems, locks and keys using the correct procedures on a daily basis. Assisting the Senior Handyperson when investigating breaches of security and reporting all breaches for further action on a daily basis.

To support Residences in achieving audits (e.g. ISO 14001, UUK), accreditations (e.g. Investors in People, Green Impact) and legislative and compliance requirements.

Initiative, Problem Solving, Analysis and Research: Ability to recognise H&S issues / incidents and respond accordingly using initiative and undertake dynamic risk assessments to ensure a safe working environment. This may include taking immediate action to make an area safe, restricting access, reporting to supervisor or senior manager, reporting to Estates help desk in the absence of the Senior Handyperson as and when required.

To undertake preliminary investigation and repair of defect reports, (e.g. plumbing, electrical, building/carpentry, general repairs), or making safe and reporting clear information to the relevant supervisor, or University Estates Department for further action via verbal or electronic means on a daily basis.
