Senior Communications and Content Officer (Digital and engagement) (PO4)

£23.41 per hour PAYE / £30.99 per hour umbrella PAYE

This role is responsible for promoting Islington's greenspaces and encouraging local residents to make the most of them.

Islington is a densely populated and built up place - only 13% is greenspace. Many residents don't have access to gardens and so our parks and green areas have a vital role to play in providing space for exercise, relaxing and improving wellbeing. They also help to improve air quality and biodiversity. As such they play a key role in the council's drive to create a cleaner, greener and healthier Islington which is why we are continuing to invest millions in improving the facilities we provide and in rethinking our green spaces.

Together with our partners in Camden, we have developed a 'Parks for Health' strategy with funding from the National Lottery and other external bodies, to help improve access to parks for certain communities in Islington who are currently less engaged - and who could most benefit for health reasons.

This role is all about supporting this initiative. Key priorities include:

Improving information about our parks across all our channels - ensuring it is accurate and compelling

Supporting our lively parks events programme and encouraging participation from audiences across Islington

Supporting targeted activities with a range of partners - including health professionals - to encourage less frequent visitors to make more use of their local parks

Promoting the work we are doing to improve our parks - encouraging participation in consultations and feeding back the results

Supporting headline activities such as Islington in Bloom - our annual gardening competition Encouraging deeper engagement and wider reach with parks through volunteering.

Significant experience of digital communications and campaigns, including developing and managing social media in a corporate environment as a reputation management and community engagement tool; creating e-newsletters; creating high quality, internet-ready content; and optimising paid and natural search and paid-advertising.

Experience of developing, implementing and evaluating communications strategies, campaigns and projects using the full range of channels and techniques.

Experience of developing and producing publications including; planning editorial content, copywriting, editing, layout, design, print and distribution.

Experience of developing positive working relationships with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders, including senior managers and politicians.

Good understanding of the importance of branding, with experience of the application of house style and visual identity across the full range of media.

Excellent inter-personal, persuasion and negotiating skills. The ability to form and maintain productive working relationships and to influence outcomes using persuasive argument.

An understanding of local authorities, the political environment in which they operate and the key issues and challenges they face, including knowledge of the various laws and codes governing equalities, public relations and communications.

Excellent copywriting skills with the ability to make complex ideas clear and easy to understand, using plain English. Ability to use video and photo editing products to produce internet-ready content. The ability to make ideas interesting and engaging; to pitch them using the correct tone of voice, and targeted appropriately to the audience. To have attention to detail to be able to edit copy swiftly and accurately.

Knowledge of best practice in digital communication principles, authoring standards, website design, accessibility, usability, user journeys, navigation and information architecture, and proficiency in the use of web information architecture presentation (sitemaps, wireframes, storyboards).

Ability to translate communications requirements to a technical brief and work with internal and external suppliers to develop digital communication solutions, with excellent project management skills

Excellent verbal presentation skills including the ability to present and explain communications concepts to internal and external audiences.

Ability to work to the highest standards, demonstrating resilience to pressure and retaining due professionalism at all times.

Excellent organisational, project management, performance management and financial management skills with a methodical approach to ensuring best quality.

Ability to manage suppliers and delivery partners including designers, consultants and voluntary groups.

Ability to adhere to the council's Dignity for All policy - and a commitment to championing the council's equality policies and practices across all aspects of the role
