JOB OVERVIEW

We have an exciting opportunity for a Safeguarding Team Leader to join us for a fixed-term period until May 2023. The successful candidate will provide support for the full range of activities undertaken by the Student Support team including (but not limited to): policies and procedures, recording and use of data, enhancement of support activities, including student enrichment, student welfare, general student support and central coordination.

The post holder will deputise for the Head of Student Support in the centre and with other stakeholders, in addition, the post holder will lead on the administrative aspects of the designated safeguarding role, working closely with the DSL (Designated Safeguarding Lead). This includes ensuring that all safeguarding policies and procedures are followed, regularly updating risk assessments (including Safeguarding and Prevent), and producing Quarterly Safeguarding Reports (QSRs) and Annual Safeguarding Reports (ASRs).

The Student Support team works collaboratively with all other teams at the ISC, and stakeholders in the University to prepare international students to progress and thrive at Durham University. The team continually monitors the student experience, to ensure that timely support is given to all students, with a view to enhancing each individual's opportunity for success.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Deputising for Head of Student Support:
  • Assisting the Head of Student Support in establishing, developing and maintaining positive working relationships with network ISCs, and Head Office to enhance the support provided to students.
  • Assisting the Head of Student Support in managing and creating, student support policies and procedures.
  • Continually developing the accuracy and efficiency of the Student Support Team, including reviewing processes to contribute to the effectiveness of the team.
  • Assisting the Head of Student Support in monitoring the quality of the provision of the team and identifying training needs as required.
  • Working closely with all other teams at the ISC to provide holistic support to staff and students (Attendance, Engagement, Welfare, Academic, etc).

Safeguarding/DDSL role:
  • Acting as DDSL (Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead) working closely with the DSL to support all safeguarding tasks, including leading the administration of safeguarding.
  • To provide and lead Monthly, Quarterly and Annual Safeguarding Reports and reviews for the network and the Senior Leadership Team.
  • To be an active member of the Critical Incident Management Team, dealing with critical situations, planning for incidents, and supporting with incidents that arise.

Welfare/Pastoral Support:
  • To oversee the day-to-day running of the welfare and pastoral provision on campus to ensure that high standards of welfare and pastoral support are available.
  • To provide a high level of pastoral care, supporting students with welfare and health issues through physical, emotional and mental health support.
  • To take a lead role in identifying and supporting students with additional needs due to health/SEND.
  • To oversee the process for screening medical needs, writing support plans and assisting students to access healthcare professionals.
  • To oversee and monitor student caseloads, providing support and guidance to the welfare team.
  • To ensure that all students are safeguarded according to the Child Protection Policy, Safeguarding Policy and associated welfare policies.
  • To attend meetings with external agencies/organisations, including care providers, the crisis team, College Guardians, the local council and the police and fire brigade.
  • Respond to First Aid emergencies and unwell students and decide on the appropriate course of action. Support students to attend appointments if required.
  • To provide statistics and assist with compiling centre reviews.

Student Induction
  • To work closely with colleagues to ensure that welfare and safeguarding sessions and activities are incorporated into the induction schedule, including medical registration, welfare talks and health and wellbeing activities.
  • To oversee induction tasks to ensure that students receive a detailed induction in all aspects of welfare and safeguarding.
  • Ensure that all student queries are addressed in a friendly, professional manner using a student-centric approach.
  • To assist with planning induction activities and events.

EXPERIENCE
  • Level 2 Safeguarding (Essential) and/or Level 3 (Desirable)
  • Experience in leading a team or the supervision of a suitably complex task or project, which achieved a successful outcome (Essential)
  • Ability to delegate activities and take responsibility for overseeing the successful completion (Essential)
