Shop Manager - Frensham Village Shop

If the idea of running a successful community shop & Post Office in a picturesque village in the Surrey Hills appeals to you then you might be the person we are looking for.

Frensham Village Shop is looking for a new manager to help us play an even bigger role in the local community whilst improving on an already financially sustainable business. Someone who is passionate about the local community & promoting local food producers. Someone who enjoys the stimulus of retail but may also appreciate the friendlier hours expected in this role - no Sundays, Bank Holidays or late evening shifts.

Offering essential Post Office services & household staples as well as supporting local suppliers & producers, there is plenty of scope to take the shop forward in your own way, with the support of 3 part-time staff, over 60 welcoming & helpful volunteers & a management committee for support and backup. It truly is a social enterprise where your commitment & aspirations for your role in the community needs to match the commercial performance of the shop.

We need someone who knows what they are doing so you will probably be a manager or assistant manager of a food or convenience store who maybe wants the freedom & opportunity that bigger chains & groups don't allow.

Essential Experience/Skills:
  • Career experience in retail management preferably in food / convenience
  • Proven experience in customer facing roles, and ability to develop warm relationships
  • Experience of team leading and people management with shared responsibilities
  • Experience of cash handling; ideally, knowledge and experience of basic book-keeping
  • Computer literate, ideally using a range of functions on EPOS
  • Experience of new product identification and introduction; building supplier relationships and negotiation
  • Experience of managing inventory replenishment and availability alongside date management and wastage control.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to apply, marketing and promotion techniques
  • Empathy for community purpose of the shop & post office

Desirable Experience/Skill:
  • Visual merchandising skills
  • Level 3 Food Hygiene certificate
  • Personal Licence for alcohol sales
  • Full Driving Licence
  • Car owner
  • Physically fit
  • Post office trained

Salary: £26-28,000 per annum, based on a 40 hour week, depending on experience and qualifications for the role. .

Hours: We are willing to be flexible up to 40 hours per week. The Shop Manager is not required to work Sundays or Bank Holidays. The shop trades 8.30am - 7.00pm week days and 8.30 - 5.30 pm on a Saturday.

Holiday: 22 days per annum + 8 Bank Holidays
