Head of Finance for East Sussex based not-for-profit specialist provider of care

Qualified ACCA/CIMA/ACA Accountant required

Client Details

Due to a retirement an East Sussex based not-for-profit specialist provider of care, support and housing services are looking to recruit a Head of Finance candidate on a permanent basis.

The successful applicant will be expected to ensure the effective and efficient delivery of the finance and business performance function to enable the organisation to deliver its strategic objectives, achieved through:
  • Developing and leading teams so they feel valued, have the appropriate skills and are able to deliver on the expectations of their roles
  • Day to day functional oversight and management providing robust financial challenge and support across the business to drive improvement and effective decisions making
  • Transform and modernise current systems, processes and controls so they are fit for purpose and future proof

Develop systems and other ways of working to further aid the effective running of the finance and performance function and wider organisation


Accountability and oversight for the finance and business performance function with operational responsibility including:

Financial management
  • Managingfinance and payroll teams
  • Manage the annual external audit, including liaison with auditors and preparation of statutory accounts
    • Maximising income through effective contract management and billing
    • Oversight of monthly payroll ensuring compliance with legislation and timely tax payments
    • Treasury functions and monitoring of cash flow
    • Ensure compliance with financial strategies and regulations
    • Develop and implement procedures and policies
    • Compile and submit various government and regulatory statistics
  • Assets and Liabilities Register

Business performance
  • As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, contribute to the development and delivery of the Association's Business Plan to achieve agreed strategic objectives
  • Provide vision, leadership and influence through partnership working across the business and take the lead on corporate initiatives and multi-functional projects
  • Work across the business to provide financial insight to stakeholders. Develop financial models and clearly articulate findings to provide support that delivers performance improvement and better informed decision making
  • Review and advise on system and process improvements to modernise and achieve efficiencies. Demonstrate skills to make change happen
  • Play a key role in the development of the i-Trent HR/Payroll system and Sun Accounts finance system
  • Manage and produce the annual budget
  • Preparation of monthly financial results and performance reporting
  • Medium-term strategic financial planning (Five Year Plan)
  • Financial modelling and new business costings/appraisals

  • Professionally qualified accountant (CIMA/ACCA/ACA) with substantial post-qualified experience
  • Significant accounting experience, including budget setting, forecasting, and preparing monthly management and annual statutory accounts
  • Experience of leading similar teams and/or a working knowledge of how to successfully run each of these types of teams
  • A proven track record of driving improvements in efficiency, effectiveness and productivity
  • Ability to analyse financial, statistical information and business activities, thinking strategically to evaluate performance, implement changes and deliver improvements
  • Ability to financially assess new business and property investments
  • An excellent communicator, with strong report writing skills, able to present complex financial models in a clear and concise way
  • Excellent organisational skills, able to manage a multi-faceted workload incorporating short, medium and long-term work activities
  • Have good project management, planning and organisational skills; ability to handle own time, prioritise and meet timelines without compromising on quality
  • Proficient in using technology and leveraging digital applications
  • A highly emotionally intelligent and people-focused approach that inspires trust and commitment of others
  • A demonstrable commitment to the principles of equality, diversity and inclusion and their practical application and integration in the work place and community
