Job description
Are you a skilled, experienced and enthusiastic internal Communications professional?

We are looking for an outstanding leader, capable of thinking strategically and being responsible for high quality delivery at pace to head up our 12- strong Corporate Services communications team. It's a fantastic opportunity to influence at the most senior levels and make a real and tangible impact on how our colleagues think and feel.

Role purpose

It is an excellent time to join our team as we embed a flexible mix of home and office working for our colleagues.

You and your team are the brokers for communications between our HR, finance and legal functions and 65,000 colleagues; your team is responsible for identifying and communicating policies and processes, particularly HR, which impact our colleagues on a day-to-day basis.

Your advice and support to senior partners on what, when and how to communicate to support positive engagement will help to make HMRC a great place to work.

As the Head of Corporate Services Communications, you will:

• Understand the big picture for colleagues and their experience of the organisation; ensuring alignment of communications and engagement activity with HMRC's organisational priorities and integrated with wider HMRC internal communications activity. This will include a new focus on effective segmentation of our target audience and messages.

• Act as a strategic partner to senior collaborators, providing strategic communications advice support and challenge through strong and effective working relationships.

• Build strong collaborative, trusted and productive networks with your peers, communications leaders and other key partners, ensuring that our overall approach is relevant, engaging and reflects their business needs.

• Set the direction for a team of 12 communications professionals - agreeing clear priorities and ensuring communications activity supports delivery of business objectives.

• Support the team to deliver clear and compelling strategies, plans and messages that resonate with target audiences, ensuring issues and potential risks are identified and resolved. Ensure all communications activity is rigorously evaluated, the impacts understood, and lessons are learned and shared in a cycle of continuous improvement.

• Build team capability so it is an impactful team - finding opportunities to work more effectively and flexibly together to enable the team to achieve their goals and give team members development opportunities.

• Create an inclusive and respectful culture which cultivates creativity and sets high performance standards; role modelling Civil Service, GCS and HMRC values and behaviours in your own team and beyond.

• Deputise for the Head of Internal and Change Communications when required.

Essential Criteria

• Demonstrable experience in a communications leadership role, ideally with experience across multiple communications disciplines.

• Significant experience in developing and leading communications strategies to support and achieve business objectives.

• Strong interpersonal skills, building collaborative and trusted working relationships with a variety of internal partners.

• An ability to develop trusted and authoritative two-way relationships with senior colleagues, exert influence at Deputy Director and Director level, and persuade senior leaders to adopt your recommendations.

• Confident working at pace and able to prioritise work across multiple projects and under pressure. You will be able to adopt a strategic view when it comes to communications/resources, make challenging and difficult decisions.

Desirable Criteria

• Working knowledge of GCS best practice, in relation to the delivery of content and channels and evaluation, including accessibility, diversity and inclusion.

• Experience of applying behavioural insights in communications to stimulate action or behaviour change
