You'll get to work with fantastic people and have a major impact on some of the most critical systems and services in the UK.About the JobA Senior Network Engineer builds, administers, transitions, supports and maintains network services throughout the service lifecycle, according to the departmental policy and Home Office strategy.You will work in a team of network and infrastructure engineers ensuring services are integrated, delivered and operated as required. You will work with and support third parties in providing network services and with technical architects to translate architectural designs into operations. The Networks and Infrastructure (N&I) team within the Home Office is responsible for delivering and maintaining the core infrastructure for all of the Home Office. This post is a technical role within the existing Cloud Infrastructure team in N&I.The team deal with a wide variety of systems, concepts, and technologies including Infrastructure as Code, immutable infrastructure, automation and serverless compute as well as the simpler public cloud provided services across several major public cloud vendors. A major part of what the team delivers is cloud-based networking services - notably, cloud transit networks. The team also deals extensively with other traditional infrastructure teams for connectivity and services as well as application teams to move legacy workloads to the cloud.Work will vary but will include project work including the design, deployment and maintenance of all common cloud networking components to approved architectural principles as infrastructure as code on multiple public cloud vendors; Integration of pre-built environments and services into the network; troubleshooting of the cloud networking environment and associated services; automation of existing processes or introduction of new automation to provide better functionality, flexibility or cost savings; build and improvement of Cloud Infrastructure networking services provided for the rest of the organisation.Essential SkillsYou'll have a demonstrable passion for Network Engineering, with the following skills or strong experience in:
  • networking concepts, switching, routing, firewalling and load balancing
  • managing and delivering complex technologies within time, cost and quality targets
  • dissecting a problem into its component parts to identify and diagnose root causes, allowing for problem resolution
  • providing direction and coaching to more junior members and taking part in their appraisal and related performance management processes
  • building effective partnerships with diverse teams across multiple locations and technologies
  • understanding how trends and practices outside your team will impact you work, how your current work fits in the broader context and strategy and looks for underlying opportunities

You should have strong experience in the following technologies:
  • Core technical network concepts: switching, routing, firewalling, and load balancing
  • Cloud networking design, implementation, and maintenance in AWS and/or Azure
  • Operations and management of an enterprise network at scale.
  • Software Defined Networking
  • Infrastructure as Code and Automation (Terraform, Python, GO, PowerShell)
  • Multiple NGFW and appliances providing routing, proxying, VPN services, firewall and inspection capabilities

The skills listed above are reflective of the Home Office DDaT Profession Skills and Competency Model (based on the industry standard SFIA framework).Desirable SkillsIdeally you will also have the following skills or some experience in:
  • presenting verbal and written information clearly and accurately in language which meets the needs of the user and can adapt to stakeholders' reactions with flexibility
  • maintaining focus on the whole life cycle of service delivery; from design, development, delivery through to operations
