Since 2007, Open Up Music has supported the musical development of thousands of young musicians who have found themselves marginalised by ‘mainstream’ musical provision.
Open Up Music are looking for a new Chair to lead and support the Board to continue with our ambitious plans. This is a really exciting opportunity to support a wonderful organisation at an important stage of its development.
What will you be doing?
The Chair is a trustee with a specific role on the Board. The Chair is elected or appointed to this role as set out in the charity’s governing document. The role of the Chair is to chair meetings of the trustee Board, supporting and supervising the Chief Executive and acting as a channel of communication between Board and staff.
What are we looking for?
We welcome applications from everyone but are particularly seeking applications from disabled people and from people from other structurally disadvantaged backgrounds and underrepresented groups. This may include people from communities experiencing racial inequality, migrants, refugees, non-binary people, people who identify as LGBTQIA+ and/or people from an economically disadvantaged background.
We would also welcome applicants with a background in finance as we will be looking to recruit a Treasurer in the near future.
The Chair should have the following qualities:
- Leadership skills
- Experience of committee work
- Tact and diplomacy
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Impartiality, fairness and the ability to respect confidences.
In most circumstances, it would also be desirable for the Chair/Vice-Chair to have knowledge of the type of work undertaken by the organisation and a wider involvement with the voluntary sector and other networks.
What difference will you make?
As a Chair, you will use your leadership skills, experience and insight to ensure the charity is run in a way that is legal, responsible and effective. You will help ensure that we deliver on what we say we will do and use the money we raise as effectively as possible. You will also work with our Board and Staff to set the future direction of the charity.
You can see our work in action: "What Fear We Then?" by Alexander Campkin performed by members of the National Open Youth Orchestra
In response to Covid, the National Open Youth Orchestra worked with a filmmaker to create a music video for this composition. Rehearsals were delivered online and going forward, we will continue to employ a ‘hybrid’ model of digital and in-person rehearsals. You can see the behind the scenes stories of three of our orchestra members here.
The Chair should be prepared to donate around 5 hrs a month to the charity. For further details please see the candidate pack.
