Working on behalf of a Local Authority, Aatom Recruitment has an opportunity for Senior Network Engineer on a 3 month contract with a possibility of an extension.
This position will be a total of 36 hours per week, with hours from 08:00am - 16:00pm.
The role of the Senior Network Engineer is to lead on the provision of prompt and effective technical support for the voice and data network service to users across the Council through resolution of incidents and service requests in line with agreed service agreements, ensuring minimal disruption/ loss of service.
Job Specific Accountabilities:
Investigate and diagnose complex network and telephony problems, working with users, other staff and suppliers as appropriate and resolve such problems to maintain overall converged network performance.
Use network management systems software and appropriate analysis equipment to maintain awareness and control of the network load, to model performance statistics and make recommendations for improvements.
Identify and rectify a broad range of operational exceptions and error conditions and deal effectively and appropriately with unexpected or extraordinary events or incidents. Where these actions necessitate modification, restriction or complete removal of resources or services available, to communicate with management, users, specialists and others, using appropriate methods (e.g. Service Desk), to inform and escalate if necessary.
Supervise and/ or undertake installation and maintenance work associated with the installation as a whole, including maintenance routines and environmental and electrical services utilising the appropriate tools and test equipment and ensure that procedures are followed, particularly those relating to safety and security.
Supervise and give instruction to less experienced colleagues in all aspects of current and correct operational practice and delegate responsibility for carrying out specific tasks to individuals as appropriate.
Analyse site survey reports and lead development of specifications of requirements and plans for installation and commissioning of hardware and software.
Draft and maintain procedures and documentation for network support and ensure that documentation of the supported systems and software is available and in an appropriate form.
Maintain the configuration management system, documenting details of all hardware/software items that have been installed, removed or changed so that configuration management records are fully updated and accurate.Knowledge, Qualifications and Experience:
BSc in relevant discipline, or equivalent industry experience
Proficient in understanding the IT/ IS infrastructure, operating systems, configurations and the IT applications and service processes used within the organisation.
Proficient in understanding the planning and management of the interaction between two or more networking systems, computers or other "intelligent" devices. Examples: topological design, load balancing, virtual distributed firewall, overlay networks.
Proficient in understanding telecommunications protocols
Proficient in understanding the methods and techniques for the capture of traffic information (packet level) and the forensic analysis of this information into its constituent elements.
Proficient in the frameworks and principles on which networks, systems, equipment and resources are based.
