About this role

ROLE

The APG Alternative Systems team is looking for an Engineering Manager to work on core engineering projects. These include Unstructured document and data management at scale (the DataVault) and the security, permissions, entitlements, encryption and authorisation to ensure the data remans secure (the AccessVault) You will play a key role in defining, designing and driving highly complex, cross-functional features across a brand new set of core capabilities. You will interact with Engineering peers, partner teams, and with Product Management to scope requirements and deliver a transformative evolution of Aladdin and eFront to support Private Markets investing

The ideal candidate is energized by having impact, is passionate about user experience and systems engineering, managing small to mediums size teams, and is proven at delivering high-quality software within distributed teams, has an understanding of investment principles, and enjoys working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Partner with Product Managers and Engineering Peers
    • Partner with product managers and be the decision point for technical issues and prioritisation
    • Understand the key investment processes being systematised
    • Strategize new ways for clients to achieve goals through the use of technology, including:
      • Increasing growth
      • Reducing risk
      • Improving efficiency
  • Engineering Excellence
    • Operate as a hands-on practitioner (60-70%) and conscience of best-practice across the team
    • Drive architecture discussions for product development, including front and backend, testing, CI/CD and DevOps
    • Ensure engineering strategy will meet business objectives and operational needs, considering quality and delivery
    • Ensure commercial mindset throughout the team - the product needs to be ready for shipping at all times
    • Resolve high-profile escalations, issues and improve the customer experience
  • Provide Project Transparency
    • Use Scaled Agile to deliver project roadmaps and schedules based on technical implementation estimation for product requirements, technical challenges, and business needs
    • Identify constraints, dependencies, risks/issues, that affect product delivery
    • Lead regular demonstrations of delivered functionality to stakeholders
    • Align to APG peers regarding technical design principles and details

    • Develop and lead adoption of engineering best practices, robust testing and product delivery
    • Adopt a user-centric User Experience design process
    • Drive a learning environment that rewards progress and betterment
    • Make engineer workloads challenging and technically rewarding
  • Collaborate Cross-Functionally
    • Ensure project documents are complete, current and available for team and leadership review
    • Bring the best from partner teams, to maximise product delivery velocity
    • Identify resources needed and work closely with the team leads to maintain full visibility of multiple projects, ensuring resource gaps are addressed efficiently
    • Coordinate and contribute to engineering deliverables like Design Reviews, support specifications and Disaster Recovery

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Proven leader, operating autonomously within global teams
  • Comfortable engaging with Stakeholders directly
  • Multi-year experience as an engineering manager working in a cross-functional software development environment
  • Software or Product experience in a development and deployment of Investment systems used around the globe
  • Batchelor Degree education in Computer Science subjects, Maths, or equivalent experience
  • Technical expertise with:
    • MongoDB or similar document based database technologies
    • ElasticSearch, Solr or similar search technologies
    • Container based deployments, and CI/CD pipelines, including Docker
    • Experience with CQRS design pattern essential
    • Kafka, Protocol Buffers and Java is essential
    • SDK + API design essential
    • Project and issue tracking systems, ideally Azure Dev Ops and Aha!
