The Opportunity:

We are looking for a River Water Quality Specialist / Catchment Scientist to enhance our team. We are looking for someone who is passionate about rivers and the whole environment from source to sea, from mountain to city. We specialise in delivering innovative solutions on both a local and catchment scale, founded on nature-based systems and novel, low-carbon technology. You will be joining a technical delivery team working on a wide variety of projects of global and national importance. These include wastewater and stormwater catchment studies (including WINEP/NEP and SOAF), nature-based regenerative solutions of all kinds, civil structures, wastewater, and stormwater treatment, and environmental flood mitigation projects across our client frameworks.

Arup provides high-level advisory/strategic thinking in the water and environment sector, we deliver detailed design services and technical advice on asset health. We invest in our own bespoke research every year, often working in partnerships, to develop our knowledge and digital tools. You will have the opportunity to experience all levels of engineering, science, and research and learn from a welcoming, diverse and talented team supporting you.

You will have the opportunity to work in packages such as the Innovyze ICM suite, SAGIS, ArcGIS, MIKE, and Tullow. You will also be encouraged, should you wish, develop your digital skills including the likes of Python and FME.

About the team:

We currently have a team of 130+ multi-disciplinary water engineers working closely together on a wide variety of projects involving waste and clean water infrastructure and non-infrastructure assets, coastal and flooding schemes. This 'West Water' team delivers projects for clients including Welsh Water, Thames Water, Severn Trent Water, Northern Ireland Water, Wessex Water, Natural Resources Wales, Environment Agency, and local government. Our work is hugely rewarding, making a positive difference to people and the environment as well as pushing the boundaries of digital innovation.

Our home offices are based in Cardiff, Bristol, and Winchester. We enjoy the benefit of 'Work Unbound', a policy that helps provide us with a healthy work-life balance; allowing us to work flexibly with a minimum of two days a week in the office.

We work closely with other offices within the UK, Particularly, Leeds, Sheffield, Birmingham, and Manchester. About you:

We're looking for an early to mid-career water quality specialists/catchment scientist with curiosity, personal drive, and technical know-how. You will be as inspired as we are by the problems we are solving and excited to be part of the team delivering the solutions. Experience in the water and environment sector is preferred. If you have all or some of these skills and experience, and a willingness and passion to work in our team, we'd like to hear from you.

  • A sound background in geography and catchment science, with a relevant Masters degree or equivalent experience
  • Experience delivering catchment and river health studies including water quality assessments
  • Deep knowledge and advanced skills in data analytics, assessing monitor data, and catchment modeling - diffuse and point source pollution. Development of root cause assessments; sources/receptors and solutions
  • A desire to learn, collaborate as part of a team, and produce high-quality work you are proud of, with an ability to manage your own workload and assist others
  • Working towards recognised water science/engineering professional qualification, or already qualified.

  • Experience in modelling water quality with SAGIS, Farm/scoper, as well as experience of undertaking WINEP, NEP, and WFD assessments in particular nutrient assessments
  • Experience using one or all of the following: Innovyze ICM, Tuflow and MIKE, and GIS skills
  • Digital skills such as Python, FME, excel
  • Experience delivering nature-based solutions and experience assessing the impact of them
  • Understanding of the six capitals and wider benefits of nature-based solutions (e.g. CIRIA B£st)
  • Presentation of results in the form of technical meetings, presentations, and reports
