The Trips Data Engineering team at looks after data for 'everything but the stay': Car rental, Taxi, Public Transport, Attractions, Flights, and Insurance. This role will reside in Manchester or London and reports into the Senior Director of Trips Tech Horizontal Services

As the Director of Trips Data Engineering, you sit at the intersection between the Trips verticals and Booking's Big Data platform. Key dimensions of your role include:
  • The stability and operational readiness of our existing data platforms for running our Trips Businesses today
  • Cloud native modernisation of our data pipelines in and out of Booking's Big Data Platform
  • Roadmap, planning and execution of the deprecation and end of life of legacy on premise hadoop and other technologies
  • Ensuring we have connected data across the verticals
  • Building the data tools and applications that support engineering of Trips verticals and cross vertical concerns

You will lead a department who work across multiple disciplines and locations including, software engineers, machine learning scientists, data engineers and data product managers focused on scaling our products and platforms. You will guide the best and the brightest professionals we hire and aim to empower individuals rather than restrict them.

Your role will operate in the mid to long term strategic narrative of the organisation ensuring that the organisation is set up for success through building a fantastic team, excellent ways of working and great technology. You can hold your own in a technical argument, but you know getting out of the way is often the best option. You get things done via influence not authority. You unlock the creativity of your team and inspire them to build the best for our customers.

You will take ownership for data governance, data quality, consistency and stability. You ensure that we have the right Service Levels for both availability and timeliness of data. Your services are used by teams with needs for highly structured and governed data like finance, data science and product analytics and you work closely with Privacy to ensure we design for compliance and trust.

As our product offerings expand to multiple experiences via the Connected Trip, your team will be instrumental in a modernization effort in all areas described. You will influence the business and developer community as our business adopts the use of public cloud and replatforming of our application stack, how data is structured & stored, how pipelines are built & deployed, machine learning models are built, trained and operated.


People & Function Leadership
  • Lead, inspire and motivate your function through leading by example and setting expectations around what success looks like, giving ownership and providing clarity when necessary
  • Ensure timely, high availability of quality data to understand and manage our business performance and improve the experience of our customers. hat data pipelines incorporate privacy and security elements
  • Measure success KPIs and report on tracks and team performance and business impact
  • Be an expert in managing stakeholders across the different departments and the Leadership Team. Communicate strategy in a compelling manner to multiple teams and relevant stakeholders
  • Build a strong leadership team, by coaching and developing Senior Software Engineering Managers, Data Managers and Principals
  • Recruit, retain and grow world-class talent in Data Management, Software Engineering, Data Engineering and Machine Learning Science
  • Foster inclusion by holding self and others accountable
  • Drive people centric initiatives that enable workforce diversity
  • Partner in and outside of our Business unit to lead and shape the people agenda across
  • Create a learning environment by coaching, two-way feedback, helping people extract and share personal learnings, and support teams to constantly adapt

Technology, Architecture & Product Strategy
  • Build the vision, set the engineering and product strategy, and define the roadmap for effective data platforms and pipelines to support the Trips verticals
  • Build and maintain strong connections with the Big Data Technologies group leveraging and converging technology roadmap
  • Be a strategic thought partner and influence senior stakeholders across the the broader business to set and align the strategic direction of your function
  • Make decisions in complex and ambiguous situations, and guide others in their decision making by recognizing and challenging assumptions, introducing relevant data and multiple perspectives
  • Ensure that the Booking architecture principles and engineering practices are adhered to, and that there is direction and alignment for each product.
  • Anticipate the need for changes based on context, and set renewed courses of action to engage teams and achieve goals, while striving to make the impact clear and understandable

Skills and Experience
  • 8+ years of Leadership Experience with high traffic sites (1,000,000+ visitors per day), preferably E-commerce sites
  • Demonstrable experience of building, shaping and leading a cross functional Engineering, Machine Learning and Data function or business unit at scale (100+ people)
  • Must have demonstrable experience of leading and delivering Big Data modernisation at scale across an e-commerce organization
  • 5+ Experience with Big Data and Machine Learning technologies
  • Experience with managing and coaching teams of senior Data, Machine Learning and engineering managers
  • Experience leading departments operationally and innovation wise (vision and KPIs/objectives setting, ideation and implementation process, people management)
  • Experience working with multiple senior stakeholders (product, engineering, finance, recruitment, external partners)
  • Demonstrable experience of working in Agile environments and more importantly an Agile culture and ethos
  • Demonstrable experience of setting, leading and influencing both the Engineering and Business strategy to the medium and long-term
  • Experience with managing and coaching teams of senior tech leaders including building and growing teams
  • Independent, pragmatic and proactive work attitude
  • Well versed in Engineering craft
  • Cloud based technologies

  • Strong commercial acumen
