Human Biological Samples (HBS) are fundamental to medical research in the discovery, development and implementation of new treatments and diagnostics. They are ethically sensitive materials and underpin the delivery of every clinical trial.

HBS are used in every clinical study performed by AZ and form the basis of safety, pharmacokinetic and efficacy endpoints that are used in regulatory files to achieve launch, and are essential for AZ's business success. As AZ's portfolio expands in volume and complexity, the dependence on effective HBS infrastructure and processes will also increase. Samples for exploratory research are also taken in AZ's clinical studies.

The HBS Transformation Program is a journey to transform HBS management across the enterprise. It includes the following key components:
  • Build of a new, automated central AZ Biocentre and digitization of the associated local HBS services, and the HBS lifecycle
  • Provision of local hatches and hubs for scientists to access pre-documented and processed HBS, including local hatches at Alexion
  • Delivery of routine sample processing to increase quality and efficiency
  • Simplification to include training, clarification of roles and responsibilities and move of HBS contracting to achieve synergies
  • Automation to drive consistency checks in informed consent language across study documentation

The HBS Transformation Program Manager is a critical leadership role to deliver the HBS Transformation to cost, time and quality. You will work in close collaboration with the Transformation Lead, and key stakeholders in the Transformation Office including, project managers, project leads, sub teams (who have project level responsibility) to ensure successful delivery of the programme from initiation to completion. You will have accountability for the overarching program plan and ensure the development of high-quality project plans, risk mitigation plans and progress reporting that incorporates all elements of the program, as well as budget and resource management of all program-related deliverables.

In addition, as part of the AZ annual business cycle, you will provide PMBLT and Finance with an annual update of the phasing for budget and FTE resource requirements, aligned to the forthcoming key program milestones; which is a critical step in achieving continued funding for the capability build.

Typical Accountabilities, what you will be doing:
Accountable for the effective operational program management of HBS Transformation:
  • Develop an overarching program plan that brings together multiple inputs i.e. from Biosamples, IT project teams, other key workstreams to visualise and track program delivery
  • Lead program level risk assessment process; drive mitigations across key stakeholders and communicate to senior leaders/ Steerco
  • Robust management of budget and FTE for overarching strategic capability build investment
  • Collaboration with Finance to provide annual update of phasing for resource and milestones for HBS Transformation investment case (close collaboration with sub teams for project level requirements)
  • Efficient operational running of day-to-day program team meetings e.g. ensuring prioritised agenda, strong facilitation to drive decision making, action/ risk management
  • Owns and maintains program documentation repository ensuring logical structure to enable ease of input/ retrieval of program information (primarily SharePoint Online/ MST)
  • Create progress report to track program delivery to cost, time and quality, inc provision of quarterly scorecard updates
  • Develop communications plan to ensure that key progress is shared with senior leaders/ Steerco

Education, Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
Essential Minimum
  • Demonstrable experience of maintaining delivery across a high number of varied projects, in a complex business environment
  • Experience in communicating and influencing senior leadership
  • Evidence of strong financial management of complex budgets with multiple cost lines
  • Evidence of leading and developing innovative solutions that positively impact delivery
  • Proven ability to influence others without authority at senior levels
  • Degree in relevant discipline or equivalent experience
  • Understanding of Precision Medicine and Biosamples concepts and technical and regulatory framework
  • Recognised Project Management qualification (e.g. PMP)
  • Project Management experience within a global pharmaceutical or diagnostics company
