At Devon County Council, we're embarking on an exciting period of significant transformation and change. That's why we're looking for an experienced Director of Legal & Democratic Services to join our Strategic Leadership Team and aid us on our journey to making Devon one of the UK's leading counties for citizens to grow up, live well, and prosper. With our new strategic plan, we're committed to driving real holistic change and creating a fairer, healthier and more caring Devon; one that's greener, more prosperous, and offers an inclusive future for all.

As our Director of Legal & Democratic Services reporting directly to the Chief Executive, your primary focus will be to ensure both areas can be improved even further. You will lead digitalisation across both service areas over the coming years, and assume responsibility for services such as Registration, Coroners, and more. To aid you in your efforts, you will inherit and lead a strong team of experts, and liaise with a wide range of stakeholders working across Legal and Democratic services.

You will also be responsible for the recruitment and retention of legal professionals - such as Childcare Solicitors and Conveyancers - throughout Devon County Council. As we adapt to a new, largely virtual way of working, you will also ensure our level of professional expertise remains consistent and continues to flourish over the coming years, while also cementing our expectations of standards and behaviours within a team based throughout the county.

About you

We're looking for someone with a forward-thinking mindset; an ambitious and driven modern thinker, with a clear vision and understanding of what we are looking to achieve at Devon County Council. Ideally, you will be able balance the technical and legal aspects of our organisation with our overall vision to create better outcomes for both the council, and our citizens.

Along with extensive experience of working within local government, you will also be a specialist in the democratic process. A demonstrable aptitude for managing democratic services and providing strong scrutiny support is also desirable.

In return, you will be able to work and live in a county that boasts vibrant cities, top-performing schools and universities, and some of the most scenic coasts and countryside in the UK.

If you're interested in transforming and shaping the future of our council, we would love to hear from you.

For a confidential discussion about these roles, please contact Helen Anderson on 07534 602845, Clare Connor on 0161 408 0703 or Anita Denton on 07725 554802. Please visit www.ambitionfordevon.co.uk to find out more and to apply.
