Team Overview

Ofcom's Spectrum Group manages the UK radio spectrum - the 'airwaves' used by wireless communications services, and the critical enabler of a wide range of wireless technologies.

The Spectrum Management and Authorisation team is part of the Spectrum Group. It is responsible for authorisation policy for spectrum across a wide variety of industry sectors, such as business radio, programme-making and special events, maritime, aeronautical, rail, emergency services, space, mobile and utilities. The team's activities are critical to Ofcom's work in allocating spectrum for maximum benefit to society.

Purpose of the Role

Run projects to deliver effective use of the radio spectrum for a range of different industry sectors.

Key responsibilities
  • Engage with the industry sectors to understand their current and evolving uses of spectrum
  • Provide technical analysis of interference environment and mitigation techniques
  • Consider thoroughly the evidence and the policy issues arising, engaging the team and Ofcom professionals from a wide range of disciplines, including engineers, economists and lawyers
  • Develop options for practicable solutions for best use of spectrum based on thorough analysis, and advise senior managers accordingly
  • Draft sections of public documents to consult stakeholders on the analysis and on proposed solutions

Skills, Knowledge and experience
  • Familiarity with wireless applications
  • Ability to think critically to challenge views and established positions
  • Ability to communicate arguments concisely and persuasively, and to contribute constructively to discussion
  • Experience of drafting and editing professional documents.
  • Experience of policy development in a regulatory or business strategy environment (desirable)
