This major NHS Trust are looking to recruit either mechanical or electrical technicians for a long term contract.

Main purpose of the role:

· To assist the Estates Officer (Operations) and be responsible for assisting in the provision of a high quality, efficient, responsive, flexible & effective estates service to the NHS Foundation Trust, working as part of the Estates Department Team.

· The post holder will be required to work as part of the Estates Operational Team along with Building, Engineering and Project Officers being specifically responsible for the provision of the estates service to the NHS Foundation Trust.

Workings Days: Monday - Friday

Working Hours: 37.5-40hrs per week

Duration: 6 Months initially

Start Date: ASAP

Requirements: Technicians, either electrical (18th edition) or mechanical (expertise in pressure system or medical gas would be an added benefit).

Main Responsibilities and Duties

· Supervision of Estates Trade Staff teams as appropriate

· Supervision of contractors as appropriate

To carry out inspections, tests, repairs, installations, as directed on Trust property, plant and infrastructure.
To undertake work as identified on allocated works dockets, completing the works and updating the Trust CAFM system in a timely manner.
Organise and coordinate own work load, and manage assigned trade staff work load as required.
To report faults identified either when carrying out routine checks/Planned preventative Maintenance or in the course of the normal working day.
To identify parts and or equipment required to carry out designated work and use Estates Stores system to obtain required items in accordance with Trust Standing Financial Instructions.
To investigate technical failures as directed and identify the appropriate permanent repair required, to ensure on-going reliability and statutory compliance.
To be part of the Estates escalation process, and assist other estate staff at all levels with technical works and technical problem solving where requested.
Carry out internal audits of Estates team work and practice.
Requirement to participate in Estates on-call rota


· Maintain and repair installations, plant and equipment to keep unplanned downtime to a minimum.

· Test, maintain and repair the Trusts building services or in an economic, efficient and safe manner, in accordance with legislation and agreed standards.

· Have knowledge of and implement the Trust Health and Safety Policy, including the issue of, and adherence to, Permits to Work for staff and contractors, managing and ensuring that all documentation and records are kept up-to-date.

· Contributing to, supervising and working in a safe environment, ensuring compliance with statutory safety legislation, Health and Safety, risk assessments, documentation, plant room and other requirements.

· Carry out duties and apply specialist skills in at least one of the following areas:

o Electrical

o Mechanical (plumbing, HVAC)

o Building

· Work from and understand detailed engineering drawings and specifications and to ensure that current regulations are followed at all times.

· Learn new techniques to develop skills as appropriate to ensure that the most effective methods are used in the course of your work.

· Demonstrate own activities to new or less experienced employees, providing advice, training and technical support to trainees/apprentices and maintenance assistants.

· Carry out induction for new staff, and undertake regular appraisals for all staff under your control.

· Be aware of and use all staff related policies to ensure that staff welfare and the effectiveness of the team is maintained.

· Maintain quality and performance standards to ensure that allocated work is completed effectively and efficiently.

· Support the Estates Management Teams to fulfil Service Level Agreements between ETS and other Trust departments and customer Trusts, advising line managers of any difficulties to ensure that communications are maintained at all times.

· Deal with major incidents such as loss of services to critical areas, loss of medical gas to critical areas, loss of heating and hot water services to critical areas.

· Provide emergency assistance to the PFI Facilities Provider and other contracted services when required.

· Supervise and assist contractors in carrying out surveys and works, as required, including assisting with access to service areas (plant rooms, roofs, duct ways, etc.) and plant.

· Participate in Estates Technical Service on-call rota, to ensure that emergencies and major problems occurring out of hours are attended and resolved.

Technical Compliance Responsibilities:

The post holder will act as a Competent Person (CP) as defined by the various HTM's, ACoP's and the Estates Quality Management System for an appropriate number of specialist services relevant to the role.

Typically, a Competent Person is a person who provides skilled installation and/or maintenance of the specialist service. The Competent Person will be appointed in writing by the Lead Authorised Person. They will demonstrate a sound trade background and specific skill in the specialist service for which they have been appointed.

This work will take place under the supervision of a 'Lead Authorised Person' for each specialist service, typically the relevant Senior Estates Officer.

Communication and relationship skills

· To provide and receive technically complex information to and from other staff suppliers, contractors, consultants, statutory and legislative bodies orally, in writing and electronically. Provides technical / practical training to ETS staff and equipment users.

· Liaise with Trust and customer Trusts' staff, project officers, contractors, consultants and suppliers together with legislative bodies as required - always promoting a positive customer orientated department.

· Provides technical training to groups of staff and contractors.

To form effective working relationships with relevant third parties and with colleagues throughout Estates and the Trust.

Responsible for the safe use, installation, testing maintenance and repair of property, plant and equipment used throughout the hospital.
