Pay : £10.20 per hour inclusive of 12.07% holiday pay. Teaching Personnel will contribute to National Insurance and Pension contributions

Working hours: 08:30-15:30

The role

Our welsh medium client school in Newport are looking to appoint two Learning Support Assistant to work on a one-to-one basis supporting a pupil with Additional Learning Needs. Both positions are to support pupils in the Foundation Phase.

The ideal applicant will need sensitivity, patience and an understanding of people's reactions. You will have active listening skills and excellent verbal communication skills. The ability to communicate verbally through the medium of welsh is essential for this post.

There is an opportunity for a temporary to permanent contract to be offered for the right person.

Supporting the pupil

Taking into account the learning support involved, to aid the students to learn as effectively as possible both in group situations and on his/her own by, for example:
-Clarifying and explaining instructions

-Ensuring the child is able to use equipment and materials provided

-Motivating and encouraging the child as required

-Assisting in weaker areas, e.g. language, behaviours, reading, spelling, handwriting/presentation

-Helping pupils to concentrate on and finish work set

-Meeting physical needs as required whilst encouraging independence

-Liaising with class teacher and SENCO about individual education plans (IEPs)

-Developing appropriate resources to support the students

-Become a Learning Mentor for individual students

To establish a supportive relationship with the students concerned.
To encourage acceptance and inclusion of the child with special needs.
To develop methods of promoting/reinforcing the child's self-esteem
The school

The school is on the outskirts of the city of Newport. There are over 200 pupils in the school. Welsh is the main teaching and learning and although very few come from welsh speaking backgrounds, all pupils are expected to be fluent in Welsh and English by the end of key stage 2. The school has 9 classes including one nursery class.

A small percentage of pupils are eligible for free school meals, which is below the national average.

The school was a 'curriculum pioneer school' which means it worked with the Welsh Government and other schools to develop a pilot of a new curriculum for Wales which was introduced last year.


If successful for this post, you will need to possess a CHILD ONLY DBS on the Update Service and be registered with the Education Workforce Council. Teaching Personnel can help with the process of getting all vetting checks done prior to starting.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
