And now we want you to join our lifesaving team. We are looking for an experienced lawyer to join our Legal and Governance Team as part of Finance and Resources Division
Title: Senior Legal Counsel
Location: Anthony Nolan Head Office, Hampstead, London
The Senior Legal Counsel will provide user-friendly commercial legal advice to all staff across all divisions at Anthony Nolan, including, if required, senior management and the trustees. Most advice is given internally but some may be given by external lawyers, pro bono or paid. The post holder will be a part of the Legal team (together with the Director of Legal and Governance) and work collaboratively with colleagues in Procurement, Data Privacy and Governance to deliver a high standard of support to operating functions throughout the organisation.
These include but are not limited to:
Advising Anthony Nolan staff of all levels about legal issues (excluding employment and health and safety law), affecting Anthony Nolan, including large or complex transactions
Producing, reviewing, drafting and negotiating commercial agreements
Taking the legal lead for the Charity's Cell & Gene Therapies (CGT) work (using external pro bono lawyers as appropriate) working with the CGT team
Engaging with and advising stakeholders across the organisation in identifying and ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and regulations
Reviewing and negotiating documents including terms of business, research collaboration agreements, software licenses, supply contracts, fundraising agreements and more to identify and manage legal and regulatory risks
Maintaining knowledge of Anthony Nolan's current activities, as well as statutory laws and regulations (including data protection legislation) and judicial developments affecting its activities
Managing and overseeing the work of external legal advisers
Supporting the Director of Legal and Governance in delivering new corporate governance initiatives
Assisting in devising and delivering internal stakeholder training
Supporting the continued improvement of standard form agreements and legal processes and assist in the development of policies and procedures where required
Assisting in providing legal support in the implementation of the organisation's strategic aims, including providing legal support to one of the organisation's key strategic aims- our participation in Cell and Gene Therapy to support medical advancements in the treatment of blood cancers; and
Undertaking other duties as may be requested by the Chair, CEO, CFO and relevant Directors as Anthony Nolan's work develops, and new needs emerge.
Qualification as a solicitor in England and Wales
Minimum of 5 years post qualification experience
Broad commercial experience gained in-house or in private practice (including a working knowledge of GDPR/data protection and Intellectual Property law
Strong background in commercial contract drafting and negotiating
A genuine interest in the life sciences' sector and the work of Anthony Nolan
Excellent communication skills, including the ability to present complex issues clearly at all levels in everyday English
Ability to work independently and also as a member of a team in a small team
Good commercial skills, sound and pragmatic judgment
Ability to plan, prioritise and deliver a wide variety of legal work for the charity to tight timescale in a fast-moving environment. Systematic and methodical in approach in giving legal advice
