Salary: £59,582 - £64,599 per annum

Job Summary

Do you have a background in launching new schemes in hospitality, events management or summer schools? We're seeking an enthusiastic professional who can harness their knowledge of these sectors and is keen to try something different in a new role. If this sounds like you, you might be the right person to lead our department in a high-reaching re-launch and growth drive.

With access to 2,500 rooms and over 100 conference/meeting venues for 12 weeks in central London, and a premium summer school hosting 500 students annually, the Commercial Operations team has a mission to generate income for Imperial during the summer months to provide support to its core academic mission.

The department was heavily impacted by the pandemic with no on-campus commercial activity during 2020 or 2021. The group is now planning to relaunch with an overarching direction for the next 2-5 years. We are now looking to refine and implement an innovative business strategy focused on achieving profitability at scale using a new concept of "Summer Learning". Expecting a pilot return to activity in summer 2022, a key focus of this role is to work closely with current staff on priorities, turning points and breakthrough achievements.

This position is a newly created role leading an established team in the pursuit of new growth objectives. We are looking for someone who is an engaging, personable and accessible communicator. You will have the skills to develop effective relationships: leading internal stakeholder consultation to secure support, motivating the team to achieve new targets and implementing the most effective frameworks to realise results.

Duties and responsibilities

You will be responsible for optimising the product portfolio and developing a resilient, commercially attractive and organisationally aligned business plan for the summer businesses. Your team will be highly experienced, knowledgeable and have a committed work ethic to achieve results. Working closely with the Director of Financial Strategy, you will get to make your mark on products, business model, resourcing structure and headline branding.

Essential requirements

We are looking for you to demonstrate and show examples of:
  • Experience at Senior Management level in a related commercial environment (e.g. hospitality, accommodation, summer school)
  • Strong knowledge of commercial seasonal business sector and the range of business models in use in the sector
  • Well-rounded business planning skills including knowledge of resourcing and organisational design
  • Ability to deploy a range of tools and methods to translate a high-level organisational strategy into concrete projects and tangible objectives (e.g. product development, marketing campaigns)
  • Strong understanding of organisational change processes and human responses to change
  • Ability to develop engaging relationships with a wide range of institutional stakeholders and empower individuals
