About MicroLoan Foundation

At MicroLoan Foundation, we enable the poorest and most vulnerable women in sub-Saharan Africa to work their own way out of poverty. By providing them with small loans and the skills and tools to start a business, we support them to become self-sufficient for their daily needs.

Over time, the money they generate from their own efforts helps to ensure food security, improved housing, access to healthcare and an education for their children. We encourage them to make modest savings as insurance against future crop failure, family illness and other unexpected circumstances; giving them confidence in their ability to weather whatever life throws at them. Since 2002, MicroLoan has reached over 280,000 of the poorest women in sub-Saharan Africa, giving hope for the future, not simply handouts.

About the role

MicroLoan Foundation is looking for a proactive and friendly self-starter to join our fundraising team. The Trusts & Foundations Officer will play an essential role in the fundraising team, who have an income target of £1 million.

You will lead on a portfolio of smaller trusts and foundations with responsibility for building relationships and securing income, as well as developing a strong pipeline of new potential donors. Our portfolio is large and diverse and includes family and corporate trusts as well as government institutions from the UK, the US, Australia, the EU and the African countries we work in. You will have the opportunity to take ownership of developing a funding pipeline as well as support the department on high value bids to gain experience of strategic partnerships.

The successful Trusts & Foundations Officer will have a proven track record of securing income from trusts and foundations, have outstanding writing and communication skills, and a passion for international development. We are looking for a self-motivated person who is driven by results and is capable of handling multiple priorities simultaneously. You will bring energy and enthusiasm to the role and will be able to hit the ground running.

Knowledge, experience & skills


Demonstrable experience of trusts and foundations fundraising, both in account management and business development
Demonstrable track record of successfully securing grants in the region of £10,000
Excellent organisational and record-keeping skills
Excellent writing skills with the ability to write engaging and persuasive proposals
Strong prospect research skills
Excellent stakeholder management, including experience of engaging and networking with internal stakeholders
Exceptional communication skills, both written and oral
Excellent grammar and proofreading skills, excellent attention to detail and accuracy
Ability to juggle a number of assignments at the same time, to plan ahead to meet application and report deadlines, to organise a busy workload and to prioritise tasks
Calm under pressure, flexible and adaptable
Good data analysis and budget skills
Solid IT skills including fundraising databases (eTapestry or other), Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
Permission to work in the UK


Experience of working with and managing volunteers
Experience of working in international development organisations


Grow income from existing Trusts & Foundations, in line with the organisations objectives and targets
Have the highest standard of donor care, i.e. timely submissions of donor reports and responding to donor queries
Proactively build relationships and secure new funding opportunities
Research and continuously replenish the pipeline of new potential donors
Update existing funding applications and creating new, well researched and high-quality funding proposals and budgets
Write high-quality donor reports which include budget reporting and social impact data
Record key information on existing and potential donors ensuring information is accurate and up to date
Recruit, steward and motivate Trusts & Foundations volunteers
Ensuring systems and databases are up to date and maintained at all times to enable analysis of the team's performance
