The role of a Commissioning Technician within BAE Systems Maritime Submarines is spread between four test sections - Reactor, Propulsion, Ship and Weapon. These are further broken down within each group into electrical and mechanical disciplines with a further structural discipline in the Ship test section. These test sections are part of the Dockside Test Organisation (DTO).
What does the Apprenticeship involve?
For the first year of your apprenticeship you will be based full time at college. During the first year you will; begin your academic studies, develop an understanding of basic hand tools and machinery and focus on health and safety requirements in an engineering environment.
From the second year you'll be introduced to the company and begin a series of placements. These placements will develop your skills, knowledge and behaviours in your chosen role.
When qualified Commissioning Technicians will test and set to work all the submarines systems and will go to sea on the submarines to conduct sea Trials alongside the Royal Navy Crew.
DTO is the only function within Submarine Solutions which gives people the opportunity to work on live systems and see them operate at sea, and underwater.
You will be working on the submarines alongside the DTO test engineers, helping with hands on testing while learning the Commissioning process, the software involved and safe working practices. You will learn system layouts and their operation in all sections of the submarine and begin to understand the complexity and diversity of the commissioning process.
Qualification requirements
Five GCSEs A*-C/ 4-9 including maths, English, science/technical subject.
Overview of business unit
Our Submarines business has been safely delivering world class submarines to the UK Royal Navy for more than a century.
The Astute class will equip the Royal Navy with its largest and most capable generation of attack submarines. We are responsible for the design, build, test and commissioning of these state-of-the-art vessels. In total, seven boats will make up the fleet, each weighing a mighty 7,400 tonnes.
Dreadnought is the successor to the Vanguard class of nuclear deterrent submarines. We will deliver four submarines to the Royal Navy, with the first submarine entering service in the early 2030s. Dreadnought is widely considered to be one of the world's most complex engineering challenges.
We have sites in Barrow-in-Furness, Filton, Frimley, Ash Vale, Broad Oak and Weymouth, and we pride ourselves on employing the best professionals around. Join us and you'll be part of something important; something you can be proud of.
Security / export control
Please be aware that many roles working for BAE Systems will be subject to both security and export control restrictions. These restrictions mean that factors including your nationality, any previous nationalities you have held, and/or your place of birth may limit those roles that you can perform for the organisation.
