Job Details

We're looking for an exceptional candidate to join our independent Grants Panel with responsibility for scrutinising grant applications to ensure consistency of assessment, value for money and potential to achieve strategic objectives.

Football Foundation are the Premier League, The FA and Government’s charity delivering upon a shared vision to help communities improve their local football facilities through grants.

What will you be doing?

The key responsibilities of the Football Foundation's Grants Panel include:

  • Ensuring that all funding applications have been properly assessed by Football Foundation staff in accordance with our governance framework, and that the required investment would achieve essential outcomes.
  • Ensuring that approved guidelines and assessment criteria have been applied consistently and equitably.
  • Providing objective-based recommendations to the Board of Trustees, as required.

What are we looking for?

Our aim is to ensure the Panel brings together a diverse, informed body of individuals who can use their specific backgrounds, skills, experiences, and perspectives to contribute to a healthy debate that leads to effective decision-making. We're looking for candidates with skills and experience across a range of areas such as strategic planning, financial management, business development, risk management and governance and regulation. However, it is also essential for candidates to have some knowledge or understanding of:

a.    Assessing projects and identifying desired outcomes.
b.    Grant provision and management.

It is desirable for candidates to be able to demonstrate that they:

a.    Have the ability to understand and critique financial data for project bids.
b.    Understand the potential impact of projects, both locally and nationally.
c.    Understand how football can act as an agent for change.
d.    Have knowledge of Government priorities and agency issues related to sport, education, and social inclusion.

Candidates will need to demonstrate sound business judgement, effective communication and interpersonal skills, and a willingness to work as part of a team to help the Football Foundation achieve its aims.

We encourage and welcome applications from all, regardless of background and are particularly interested to hear from individuals belonging to under-represented groups including minority communities, those with a disability and the LGBTQI+ community.

What's in it for the volunteer?

Since 2000, the Football Foundation has been privileged to make a truly transformative difference to grassroots football across the country. We are proud that, through the investment of our funding partners into grassroots football, we have seen incredibly positive effects on physical health, mental health, participation, and the overall economy, and we want to keep moving the goalposts. Being a member of our Grants Panel is an exciting opportunity to join us in making a contribution to grassroots football.

Time commitment

A commitment of around 12 days per year scheduled around Panel meetings. The Panel currently meet four times a year (January, April, July, and October), scheduled to tie in with the meetings of the Board of Trustees. Members are expected to be available for all four Panel meetings. Meetings are held either virtually via Microsoft Teams, or at the Foundation’s offices in central London. They usually run for half a day (excluding any travel time).

Before you apply

Applications are through the Reach volunteering platform.

To apply, please send a CV and cover letter (one-page of A4) highlighting your motivation for the post and indicating how your skills and experience meet the criteria for the role.

Reach is the leading skills-based volunteering charity in the UK. We are the single biggest source of trustees for the voluntary sector in the UK. Connecting people, skills and good causes is our mission and our passion.

What we do

We help charities and other non-profits find the skills they need to thrive. Every year hundreds of charities recruit volunteers through our service. These volunteers share their skills as trustees, advisors or mentors, carrying out short term projects or ongoing operational roles.

Our goal is to create a step change in the quality, range and scale of skills-based volunteering and trusteeship in the UK. We are proud of our growing impact.

Why we do it

Charities can boost their capacity, increase their effectiveness and innovate / find new ways of doing things when volunteers donate their professional skills. Trustees play a crucial role in leading charities and overseeing their work. When the trustee board of a charity has a good mix of skills and professional experience, it can govern more effectively.

By supporting charities to recruit volunteers and trustees with valuable skills, we help charities increase their capacity and strengthen their governance.

How we do it

Our online community inspires people to use their skills for social good. We help organisations to make the most of those skills, to think through their needs and to attract the right person. We believe that communication is important in recruiting trustees and volunteers, so our service encourages dialogue between organisations and individuals. Our service is free to volunteers and to most charities. Find out more about when we charge.

For volunteers and charities

Whether you are an organisation that wants to find a volunteer with particular skills or a new trustee, or an individual who has a skill you want to offer, you can:

  • join the community as a volunteer or as a charity and create a profile
  • explore roles and profiles
  • make contact and talk through what you're looking for
  • make a match.

Our guides and resources help volunteers and good causes make the most of skills-based volunteering.

Other organisations and partners

We also work with other organisations including:

  • businesses, supporting their staff into rewarding volunteer or board positions
  • funders, supporting their grantees.
