Role Senior Solicitor- Litigation
We are looking for Senior Solicitor- Litigation to work with Luton Borough Council to represent the Council at Courts and Tribunals and comply with Court directions.
About the Role :
Give legal advice, often in relation to highly complex matters, to Officers and Members of the Council as required to allow them to make decisions and achieve solutions to problems which comply with the law.
Represent the Council before Courts and Tribunals as unsupervised advocate conducting cases in a way that complies with current practice and protocols and take all reasonable steps to achieve the judgements/decisions which could reasonably be expected from the available evidence.
Carry out, with a minimum of supervision, a wide range of other legal work as required, including the drafting of any necessary documents (but excluding conveyancing and similar property matters) to implement decisions taken in pursuance of the Council's functions.
Provide legal clearance for reports and attend and give legal and procedural advice including in relation to complex and highly complex matters to the Executive, to any Committee or Members of such Executive and to such Committees, Sub-Committees, Working Parties and other groups of Members or Officers as may be required to enable decisions to be taken and implemented in accordance with the law.
Exercise judgement, as to whether specialist legal advice and/or assistance is required and instruct Counsel in such cases as may be approved by the Head of Legal Services or the Principal Solicitor (Litigation) to enable decisions to be taken and implemented in accordance with the law.
Participate in projects relating to corporate, interdivisional or interdepartmental work as may be required by the Principal Solicitor (Litigation) or the Head of Legal Services to enable the Council to formulate and implement policies in accordance with the law.
Ability to hold a case and deal with the case from charge to conclusion.

Able to demonstrate ability to undertake legal work with a minimum of supervision
Able to demonstrate ability to plan/ prioritise own caseload within broad guidelines
Decisive - ability to make decisions - render judgement
Oral and written communication skills - able to elicit relevant information in complex situations and translate it into effective documents
Ability to work in a team
Demonstrable knowledge of English Law
Criminal litigation and comprehensive knowledge of at least 1 of the following areas of law; regulatory, licensing, housing, education
Working knowledge of the Law of Evidence
Desirable skills :
Local Government Experience
Working knowledge of the Criminal Procedure Rules
