A leading online publisher and virtual events business have continued to grow year on year and are increasing their investment into their digital transformation programme. With the development team set to double in the next 6-12 months, they require a Lead Data Engineer to focus on building a team to help improve data feeds, data warehouse, data analytics and data science capabilities. Key objectives includes helping the data science and business intelligence teams to have the right tools and high quality data to, in turn, help the business gain significant advantages in analysis and decision making across their sales, marketing and content functions.
Reporting into the Head of Technology, the Lead Data Engineer will be responsible building out a data engineering team, owning and contributing to a number of initiatives such as:
Set the agenda and own the roadmap for improvements to the data warehouse - performance, quality, timeliness and availability
Estimate, shape, design and deliver data warehouse projects
Take a lead role in cross data initiatives e.g. ensuring data for new products is available in the DWH; data migration into the DWH as new companies are acquired, etc.
Provide technical guidance / best practice to the engineering team
Own day to day operations and issue resolution of the DWH
Manage 3rd party supplier
Management responsibility of a data engineer, plus a team of 3rd party data engineers that are assigned to development projects
Collaborative planning & working with technical and business teams
Build complex data pipelines from numerous data sources
Explore and implement a machine learning strategy and help guide the business towards a more data science approach. This will require starting to build pipeline using Python
Lead Data Engineers will have:
A degree (or higher) preferably qualified in a Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) based degree
Lead or management experience of a data engineering team
Experience of project work packages or projects using Kanban / Jira
Microsoft SQL Server (SSMS, SSIS)
Windows task management / scheduling, PowerShell scripts
SQL database performance optimisation
Structured approach, testing & documentation
Ability to assimilate information from a variety of sources and present well-reasoned recommendations back to the business
It is advantageous of Lead Data Engineers have:
Previous data warehouse experience supporting campaign, data science and BI teams
Familiarity with SAS and Tableau
Experience or a keen desire to learn and use Python for machine learning
