We are undergoing a major transformation programme, which includes a major investment in digitisation. This means customers can do more for themselves online, in real time, on computers, tablets and smartphones therefore we are establishing a team of outstanding people who will build and run these new and improved technology services. To do that, we need Senior User Experience Designers who will provide the design vision and expertise to build high quality digital products and services that meet user needs.

• producing design concepts for digital services, often working to tight deadlines, and working with developers to implement those concepts

• delivering high quality finished designs that meet web standards and GDS/GOV.UK design principles

• ensuring that accessibility and usability are built into designs from the outset

• proactively seeking new learning opportunities and look to continually improve by gaining feedback from your peers and the business

• communicating credibly with a wide range of digital delivery disciplines and talent both internally and externally

• being a knowledge expert in interaction design

• providing leadership, mentoring and coaching within the design community

• line managing more junior designers

• participating in the HMRC and cross-government design and policy communities

• using our prototyping tool and HTML/CSS for high-fidelity design

• extensive experience designing accessible interactive digital products or services that meet user needs; you will need to show evidence of this as part of your application by including links to interaction design portfolio/examples in your personal statement

• core design skills of sketching and prototyping including through prototyping tools and/or HTML and CSS; willingness to develop relevant coding skills if needed

• experience planning interaction design work, including developing high level project plans for design activity

• solid understanding of user research methods and practice with proven experience using metrics and user feedback to define/refine services

• experience of journey mapping and needs analysis with good understanding of information design/architecture

• strong ability to recognise and predict use cases and user interaction, incorporating them into designs

• good understanding of web technologies and how they affect design, including accessibility

• experience of working with pattern libraries and/or style guidelines

• strong skills in communicating design decisions; convincing people that user needs and a user-centred approach are the right way to design products and services

• experience leading workshops e.g. collaborative design sessions

Desirable expertise:

• GOV.UK standards and working practices

• designing within a government context

• experience of working with an agile, cross-functional team
