Could you bring your skills and expertise to the Glass Door Homeless Charity’s Board and help us deepen our impact? We are looking for a committed and proactive Trustee to support the Board with HR expertise.


Role summary

The People Trustee will bring wide-ranging HR expertise and experience to advise and recommend, and to provide strategic direction and planning rather than implementation (except in occasional and limited circumstances as agreed with the CEO and the trustee body).

  • The human resources of the charity are not only its paid staff but also its trustees/directors and its large body of volunteers, and the people trustee will support the HR team to deliver high standards of legal, regulatory and governance compliance across all of these groups, in light of changing requirements and best practice.
  • This will require a proactive but collaborative approach, working to an agenda agreed with the HR Manager, HR team and the CEO as well as the trustee body and interacting as appropriate with other functional trustees eg Finance
  • The people trustee will input to HR projects around specific initiatives, and support the staff team in relation to ongoing HR matters
  • Specific HR initiatives currently contemplated are in the areas of flexible working; equality, diversity and inclusion; learning and development; and reward and recognition.
  • Ongoing areas of focus are recruitment and employment contracts; development of staff and volunteer-related policy and practice, including regular review of existing policy and practice; staff wellbeing; risk assessment and the impact of HR interventions on recruitment and retention


Who we are looking for

We are looking for someone with the following experience, skills and qualities:

  • Experience of performance management, HR/employment law issues, managing L&D and EDI and implementing them contextually (or experience equivalent to CIPD Chartered Member level)
  • Willingness and ability to understand and accept their responsibilities and liabilities as Trustees, to act in the best interests of the Charity and to abide by the charity's Code of Conduct.
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically, exercise good, independent judgement and work effectively as a board member.
  • Effective communication skills and willingness to participate actively in discussion.
  • A strong personal commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • Commitment to Nolan’s seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.
  • Willingness to bring new ideas and work as part of the Trustee body in line with the vision and ethos of Glass Door.

We are looking for people willing to bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role, and who will broaden the diversity of thinking on our Board.

Although Glass Door services often take place within churches or church-owned properties, please note individuals with connections to a variety of faiths or none work for, volunteer at, and use the services of Glass Door.


Time commitment

  • Board meetings take place after working hours for approximately 2 hours every other month.
  • The HR Trustee will need to be actively involved beyond Board meetings, including reading Board papers, providing advice and guidance, and attending further meetings including (at minimum) the following:
  • HR working group, who meet for 1-2 hours on a monthly basis during working hours.
  • All Trustees attend a strategy meeting once a year.
  • There is a staff away day which Trustees are encouraged to attend.
  • Pay and Benefits Committee, which the People Trustee will be a member of.
