North East Sensory Services (NESS) delivers the first integrated joint sensory services in Scotland and is the NESS is the leading local provider of services for people living with serious sensory loss including people who are blind and deaf.
The original charity was started in 1879 and has grown and developed over the years but still retains its deep-rooted connection to the people in the North East. NESS provides a wide range of services to those with sensory impairment to be as independent as they can be and allow them to live as independently as they wish. Services include statutory services that are funded by Health and Social Care Partnerships and added value services that are funded by the charity.
With a history rooted in supporting the blind, in 2010 NESS was invited to take over the running of the deaf services in Aberdeen, and later successfully tendered for the joint sensory services in Aberdeen City. Their success in this cemented their identity as one of the only fully integrated joint sensory services in Scotland, delivering support to people who were deaf or hard of hearing as well as those who were blind or partially sighted. Since then, NESS has taken on services in Dundee and Angus, and now supports over 6,500 people with a sensory loss in Aberdeen, Moray, Dundee, Angus and Aberdeenshire.
Operating with a well-defined culture of sustainability, development and growth, NESS has received many accolades over the years. They currently hold Investors in People Gold status and have done so for 5 years, following on from 6 years at bronze status. In 2016, NESS was recognised as an excellent employer and was awarded the IIP International Award for "Excellence in the third sector".
