We have a great opportunity for a Principal Hardware Engineer at Leonardo in Edinburgh. In this role you will design and develop complex test solutions for Fire Control Radar Systems.

You will be working as part of a multi-disciplined team with responsibility across the full Engineering Lifecycle from requirements capture to final delivery. This is an exciting and challenging opportunity to join a highly skilled team at a time of significant growth within the Radar sector.

Design and development across the full lifecycle from requirements analysis; through conceptual, preliminary and detailed design, procurement and manufacturing support; to integrating the hardware with the hosted software and firmware; and lastly to acceptance test and delivery to the customer
As a design engineer, you are responsible for creating high quality and robust data packs; for fully documenting and recording your work products; keeping them under configuration management and providing plans and reports on progress to your line manager
Completing tasks in accordance with appropriate processes and procedures
Taking an active role in engineering process improvement
Plan and deliver own work, across medium term planning horizons and provide complex technical advice to both internal and external customers
Plan work and supervise work for junior engineers
Mentor, coach and develop more junior members of the team in order to develop overall capability
You will work closely with Software and Firmware engineers to solve real integration problems at system level
Most training will be delivered via on-the-job experience working in a hardware design team forming part of a multi-discipline delivery team
Additional formal technical training to augment the on-the-job training may be provided via taught courses depending on the business needs
Degree qualified in Electronic Engineering / related science or equivalent work experience
Adaptable and innovative-embracing new initiatives and how to transfer them into service capabilities
Ability to analyse system level documents and derive detailed Unit requirements under own initiative
Experience of de-bugging and testing new designs and supporting module and system related test, verification and integration project phases as required by a development type programme prior to system deliveries
Ability to communicate effectively across different disciplines both verbally and in written form
Ability to work on own or as part of a team to resolve technical issues
Must be self-motivated and have an aptitude to problem solve and drive difficult issues to conclusion
Ability to interface with suppliers of key components and assemblies

Experience of designing solutions for one or more of the following technologies would be beneficial:
Radio Frequency/Microwave/Antenna
Digital and/or Analogue
Power Supplies
High Speed Digital Interfacing
Common interfaces e.g. RS422, 1553, I2C/SPI, Ethernet

Highly desirable skills (not essential to apply):
A good engineering background and experience across the full lifecycle of large scale projects
Previous experience of working with Radar systems
Experience of the National Instruments Toolset (LabView, TestStand, LabView FPGA and LabWindows CVI)
Use of requirements management tools (e.g. DOORS)
