An outstanding opportunity has arisen to join one of the UK's largest specialist sub contractors in a key engineering role. Our client is a group of companies that is comprised of several businesses delivering construction services in the UK Structural Steelwork Industry (circa £100m t/o). This client has a full order book and its growth will continue. This has led to the requirement for a strong engineering candidate to join their engineering business as Design Manager overseeing design (Steelwork Calculations/Connections).
The Design Manager will report into the Engineering Director and this piece of recruitment is a key part of succession planning hence an outstanding career opportunity is on offer.
The appointed candidate will be expected to;
Fully participate in the management and development of the Engineering business.
Manage a team of engineers and technicians.
Manage technical standards, CAD standards, procedures and practices.
Oversee Design Calculations/Connections
Liaise with client's engineers, architects, other designers and internal divisions/departments.
Manage liaison with group construction teams.
Management of internal and external engineering resources.
Program team workload.
Maintain the operational budget.
Manage and maintain change control systems.
Report on project status at the appropriate frequency.
Provide value engineering advice to group sales teams.
Manage recruitment when necessary.
Manage engineers, CAD technicians and graduate training.
Assist with training of other inhouse engineers and technicians.
Implement the company QA procedures in relation to these activities. Knowledge
The appointed candidate will be able to demonstrate the following experience at interview stage;
Building construction knowledge.
Good level of structural and civil engineering knowledge.
Knowledge of current British and European design standards.
Steelwork and Concrete design experience.
Groundworks design experience.
Knowledge of construction related sustainability and environmental issues.
Drainage design systems.
Structural precast concrete design.
Cold formed section design.
Temporary works design experience.
Cladding envelope materials.
Concrete and metal decking flooring systems. Experience
The appointed candidate must able to demonstrate the following experience at interview stage;
Proven experience of managing design on behalf of a structural steel fabricator.
Ability to manage and motivate people.
Plan, control and report on works programs.
Previous technical management experience.
Previous experience of dealing with contractors, engineers, architects.
Commercial awareness of economic construction techniques.
Experience of operating to an ISO 9001 quality system.
Experience of 3D computer analysis systems.
Understanding of project management processes.
Previous experience of operating in a similar company.
Qualified as; C.Eng, MIStructE or MICE.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Ability to work under own initiative.
