Head of Business Strategy - Wild Planet Trust
Wild Planet Trust
Wild Planet Trust (WPT) is currently seeking to appoint a Head of Business Strategy who will report direct to the
Chief Executive. Ideally suited to a creative and dynamic individual who cares deeply about the planet's species and
habitats, this new post is one in which the incumbent will have an unusual level of responsibility and a unique
opportunity to help shape WPT's vital conservation and biodiversity work.
WPT is a leading UK conservation charity. It was established nearly 100 years ago and has always been at the forefront
of combining its conservation work with introducing the wider public to the magical world of exotic species. WPT
currently runs two zoos in south west England (Paignton and Newquay) and employs around 300 people to care for
over 3000 animals, some of which are critically endangered in the wild. In addition WPT owns a national nature
reserve, supports more than 20 conservation programs around the world and conducts research up to PhD level.
WPT is a multi-£M turnover business and welcomes around 750,000 people to its sites each year.
The organisation is currently embarking on a major transformation journey which draws on our rich legacy but which
re-positions us so that we are increasingly relevant for the biodiversity challenges that face the planet. As part of a
coherent strategy fully supported by the Board of Trustees we have recently restructured the organisation to ensure
that we develop and articulate a single compelling narrative that underpins our work; become more agile to leverage
emerging technology to help us work smarter and better support our animal welfare research programs; and reach
more people through our conservation communications campaigns. This is a pivotal moment in the history of the
Trust and the Head of Business Strategy role provides a unique opportunity to help shape our future.
In the context of a Board-endorsed 10-year WPT vision, the Head of Business Strategy (HBS), as part of ExCo, will be
responsible for advising the Chief Executive on business plans looking 2 - 5 years out. The HBS will then turn the
outline plans into actionable objectives and monitor progress. HBS will collaborate closely with the Chief Science
Officer who is tasked with developing the conservation strategy. The other key members of ExCo are the COO who
is responsible for operationalising and implementing the strategy and the COO's Business Manager, who is responsible
for coordinating the work of the Heads of Department in meeting in-year objectives.
The HBS will also be responsible for developing the fund-raising strategy, setting annual targets and operationalising the
plan. The HBS be the line manager for the WPT fundraising officer.
The business strategy and fundraising plans will take into account all major influencing factors including our
conservation strategy, government and agency policy development, public perceptions, our campaigning and outreach
agenda, and WPT financial performance.
The post is based in Paignton, Devon and, whilst WPT is a strong supporter of flexible working, we would expect the
HBS, at least initially, to be a regular and visible presence on our sites.
The ideal candidate will have a mix of a Bachelor's degree in a science discipline, up to ten years multi-sector
experience, and a recent MBA. They will have a strong interest in conservation issues and have a truly international
perspective. The HBS will need to prepare board-level papers and brief the Board of Trustees so fluency in written and
spoken English is an essential pre-requisite. Since the analysis of current and modelling of future financial performance
will be an important component of the work, the ideal candidate will have excellent numerical and analysis skills. The
ideal candidate will also have excellent inter-personal skills, will be able to quickly forge strong working relationships,
and will be a confident public speaker.
The start date for the successful candidate would be in the period August - September 2021. Salary will be in the
£40-50k range and a relocation package may be available for negotiation.
Closing date for application is 1800 on 22 July 2021 with long-listed candidates being invited for zoom interview during
the week starting 26 July 2021. Short-listed candidates will be invited to interview in Paignton in early August
