Job Details

The Distance is a creative, digital agency specialising in mobile apps across iOS, Android. We were one of the first App Developers in the UK and are pleased to have been named

as one of the Top 5 UK Mobile App Development Developers. With a wide range of clients ranging from start-ups to blue-chips and public sector companies, including Camden Market, Slimming World, the NHS, Astra Zeneca and SafeStyle UK.

With demand for mobile booming we are looking at growing our development team by employing a developer with strong backend development experience capable of architecting and delivering complex custom cloud solutions.

The role will be primarily focused on building bespoke backend applications, including creating and further developing our own proprietary solutions such as our mobile CMS solution 'The Core', as well as creating API's; implementing complex business logic; supporting integration across mobile apps and 3rd party systems.

The role will focus on building serverless backend systems using AWS Lambda/Azure (where necessary, suitable training opportunities will be provided).

To be successful in this role you will have experience in the following:

  • Delivering high quality, robust and testable code
  • Expertise in Typescript/JavaScript, specifically Node.js
  • Experience developing GraphQL/REST APIs
  • Knowledge of TDD or BDD approaches to developing software
  • Ability to write unit tests
  • Experience of PostgreSQL databases

It would be a bonus if you had experience of the following:

  • GraphQL
  • NestJS
  • Amazon AWS
  • Azure
  • Serverless experience
  • DevOps; familiarity with the CLI and Linux administration
  • Project estimating/quoting
  • JIRA

Training and progression will be considered and offered, tailored to your specific level of experience and aligned with fast-tracked career progression for less experienced developers. We would be happy to support someone making the transition from other mobile development environments to React Native.

Fluent English oral and written communication skills are required as you will often have to engage with the rest of the team and occasionally with clients either on a call or in person.

Finally the candidate must show a keen interest in making the mobile world a career choice. The Distance want to help develop a master of their trade by a supportive environment and additional training opportunities where required.

The role comes with:

  • A competitive salary (depending on experience)
  • Latest MacBook Pro and 4K Monitor
  • Workplace pension
  • Minimum of 31 days holiday entitlement (as we close at Christmas)
  • Flexible working hours
  • Regular team socials
