What is Turntabl's story?
Our mission is to bring London tech standards and complex tech projects to the developing tech scene in Ghana.
In 2017 our founder created an initiative aimed at teaching coding to Ghanaian computer science students. Over a few years it became clear that there was a pipeline issue in that they were training great graduates with modern technologies and agile best practices but there were not enough jobs in Ghana. Turntabl was created in 2019 to solve this problem.
Having expanded rapidly to over 100 software engineers, Turntabl is now looking to go into the next chapter of growth and are hiring several engineering team leads who can continue to level up the engineering team and internal culture, whilst helping to mentor and develop the team.
Your mission at Turntabl
Your mission is to become part of a team of people, responsible for coaching and mentoring software engineers at Turntabl. The project teams work in embedded teams of four on projects at banks or fintechs, you'll work with these teams running fortnightly one to ones, offering advice and coaching where necessary in order for them to become stronger engineers.
You'll also have an opportunity to impact the wider agile engineering culture, getting involved in knowledge sharing events, hosting lightning talks sessions and brown bag sessions. You'll be working as part of a friendly collaborative culture where you can really make a difference to the lives of young engineers.
You will have the chance to dial in to project calls and deal with clients and end users, help collaborate on finding solutions and making sure the teams are on track.
Engineering at Turntabl
The projects are across various languages including Java, C#, Scala. Each of the team at Turntable have been through an extensive and world leading 12 week training program. Tech excellence is one of the values, the projects we take on are complex, high tech projects within banks and fintech organisations. Often at high scale, high performance so our tech team need to be equipped to handle them.
Projects are varied, but past examples of typical projects include building ETL tools for big-data processing on AWS, self-service cloud deployment tooling with Terraform and Ansible, and API management and permissioning infrastructure for thousands of internal REST endpoints. We've worked on full-stack post-trade analytics systems and a data-generated UI for API discovery.
We have a very friendly, collaborative culture based around knowledge sharing and helping each other out. This culture exists both internally within the teams and externally where many of our engineers are members of tech user groups.
The management approach is very empowering, people are encouraged to learn and experiment with new technologies and are given opportunities where possible.Requirements
What we're looking for in our Team Lead
We are looking for someone that can mentor and cultivate talent within our engineering team hence we are expecting applications from someone with the following skills and experience in their background These are ideal but not required as we know some people are less likely to apply for the role.
We expect applications from people with three core qualities
- Mentorship - Kind, supportive people looking to mentor and empower others to become excellent software engineers
- Tech Excellence - People who have experience of working in high tech environments on complex tech projects
- Delivery - Those that understand and appreciate getting software delivered in an agile software environment
Broadly speaking we are expecting applications from those that fit the following profile
- 3-8 years in a software engineering environment
- Strong core software engineering principles
- Worked in environments where agile best practice has been encouraged
- Has an appreciation for getting things delivered
- Has become adept in collaborative problem solving
- Has an appreciation and opinions on what makes a good agile software engineer
- Would consider themselves a good mentor to junior software engineers
- Has worked on complex tech projects
- Much of the work we do is around the Java and JVM ecosystem so experience here is an advantage but we are prepared to accept applications from a variety of tech backgrounds
