Job Details

Buxton Opera House is looking to appoint three new Trustees to help take forward the Opera House as it enters an exciting new phase of development. This is a pivotal moment for Buxton Opera House and a really exciting time to join our Board.

Our Trustees provide leadership to the charity and contribute to its overall governance and strategic direction. The day-to-day management of the organisation is provided by the executive team, headed by Chief Executive Paul Kerryson. Trustees play an integral role in decision-making to develop the organisation’s goals, and are responsible for ensuring the charity remains financially robust and continues to provide public benefit. Trustees are Non-Executive Directors and members of the Board of High Peak Theatre Trust (the name of the charity registered with the Charity Commission).

Engaged Trustees offering a range of skills and experience are vital to the success of Buxton Opera House. Our Trustees come from diverse backgrounds and are chosen for the skills and expertise they can bring to effective governance. They also have an understanding of the issues affecting the cultural sector and share a fundamental appreciation of the value of the performing and creative arts in enhancing lives, building communities and contributing to economic regeneration.

What are we looking for

We are seeking to recruit three new Trustees with specialist expertise. You do not have to have previous Board experience to apply but we would expect all potential Trustees to understand the principles of good governance, to have strong leadership skills and to have some knowledge of and affinity with the arts sector and the challenges it faces in the current climate. As a values-led organisation we are committed to building an inclusive culture that values diversity and that welcomes people from all walks of life. Our principles of inclusivity and diversity are reflected in our artistic programme, in our staff and creative teams and in the composition of our Board. We welcome candidates from all backgrounds to apply for these Trustee positions. In particular we are looking for people with expertise in one or more of the following areas: The Arts, Legal, Fundraising, Education, People Management, Marketing / Communications.

Board meetings take place five times per year and normally last for two hours. There is also one full strategy away day each year and Trustees normally join one of the three main Board sub-committees

Benefits of joining High Peak Theatre Trust’s Board include:

  • Helping to make Buxton and the High Peak a great place to live and visit
  • Helping to steer the strategic vision of Buxton Opera House and the Pavilion Arts Centre
  • Being able to use your skills in a way that adds value to others’ lives
  • Making a real contribution to the impact of arts and culture across the region
  • Helping to realise the potential of the organisation’s regional and national role as a centre of excellence and a major tourist attraction
  • Extending and developing your network of contacts

Buxton Opera House is Derbyshire’s only largescale cultural venue for the performing arts. Its position and contribution to the regional economy are critical to the town’s redevelopment vision. As an incubator for young talent, we have created a musical company and inspire young people who are yet to discover their potential. Our vision is to have a local, national and international reputation for inspiring quality theatre and film in a transformed environment that will preserve Buxton Opera House for generations to come. As we enter a new phase of development, this is a pivotal moment and a really exciting time to join our Board.

How to Apply

Applications are through the Reach platform. Please provide a CV and supporting statement. The closing date for applications is Monday 26 July 2021.

Reach is the leading skills-based volunteering charity in the UK. We are the single biggest source of trustees for the voluntary sector in the UK. Connecting people, skills and good causes is our mission and our passion.

What we do

We help charities and other non-profits find the skills they need to thrive. Every year hundreds of charities recruit volunteers through our service. These volunteers share their skills as trustees, advisors or mentors, carrying out short term projects or ongoing operational roles.

Our goal is to create a step change in the quality, range and scale of skills-based volunteering and trusteeship in the UK. We are proud of our growing impact.

Why we do it

Charities can boost their capacity, increase their effectiveness and innovate / find new ways of doing things when volunteers donate their professional skills. Trustees play a crucial role in leading charities and overseeing their work. When the trustee board of a charity has a good mix of skills and professional experience, it can govern more effectively.

By supporting charities to recruit volunteers and trustees with valuable skills, we help charities increase their capacity and strengthen their governance.

How we do it

Our online community inspires people to use their skills for social good. We help organisations to make the most of those skills, to think through their needs and to attract the right person. We believe that communication is important in recruiting trustees and volunteers, so our service encourages dialogue between organisations and individuals. Our service is free to volunteers and to most charities. Find out more about when we charge.
