The Surveillance Operations team is part of a scientific network that connects researchers, clinicians, and global health leaders across the globe with cutting-edge DNA sequencing technologies and genomic research. Through a number of multi-centre projects, we provide a framework for generating, integrating and sharing genetic and genomic data, and for investigating key questions about COVID-19, malaria biology and epidemiology. These frameworks and proof of concept software developments are also the base for supporting genomic surveillance operations across various contexts going into the future.
As part of the MalariaGEN initiative delivering its current commitment under a grant provided by the Gates Foundation, the Business Systems Team within Surveillance Operations have built a solution to support the tracking and management of malaria studies and their associated samples. This solution allows global partners to register studies, send Sanger samples for DNA sequencing, along with their associated metadata, and one which enables the tracking and management of these samples through a complex process at the institute. This ultimately results in data being released to partners and the public. In addition to this, the Business Systems team have delivered a similar solution for the tracking of COVID-19 samples, which are currently being sent to the institute for DNA sequencing. The Business Systems team within Surveillance Operations continues to focus on the continuous improvement and development of these software applications going forward as well as producing other proof of concept software products in line with the Surveillance Operations strategy. About the Role:
As a Product Manager you will work in conjunction with the Product Management Lead in setting the Strategy and Vision for a product and defining actionable, achievable, and measurable goals which help achieve the product vision and business objectives. Taking end-to-end ownership of the digital product, you will work with the product stakeholders to define key requirements and features and turn them into a product backlog of user stories. Your passion for collaboration will be put to full use as you work with a multi disciplined team (Scrum Master, UX/UI designer, Software developers and QA Testers) to ensure that the backlog is prioritised, to accurately reflect the business needs and goals, estimated and scheduled into sprints for delivery. On delivery of a product or feature you will work with the QA test resources to ensure it has been fully tested before release to the stakeholders for User Acceptance Testing. On completion of the testing cycles you will work with the Senior Product Manager and/or Product Management Lead to plan the release and communications to users and other stakeholders.About You:
You are a highly organised self-starter who likes to work in a complex, fast moving and challenging environment. With good knowledge and experience of the product life cycle within a Digital Services environment, you will manage product stakeholder engagement to ensure clarity of requirements while actively removing ambiguity. You will have out of the ordinary communication skills - you know how to bring people together to achieve a common purpose. You will be comfortable working both in a team and independently, prioritizing workload while meeting objectives effectively and efficiently. - Experience of planning project delivery, managing a prioritised backlog and breaking this into a set of sprints for delivery.
- Experience of developing Epics, and User Stories and breaking these down into actionable stories that can be delivered by software developers.
- Knowledge and experience of Agile development practices, including version control, continuous integration, and workflow management tools such as Gitlab or Jira.
- Experience using workflow management tools such as Gitlab or Jira would be advantageous.
- A broad understanding of technology and its use from a business perspective, understanding key components, such as back-end and front-end development, APIs, databases would be advantageous.
While the developments around COVID-19 continue to evolve, the Wellcome Genome Campus is closed for all but essential functions and facilities. The return to campus roadmap is currently underway with some staff starting to migrate back to the Campus from mid-May 2021. People remain at the centre of everything that we do, and the majority of our staff are now working remotely to ensure continuity of operations, making use of remote communication and collaboration tools.
