About the role

Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for a Totton Depot Supervisor to join our Rail team to work in Totton, Hampshire.

Role purpose

The Depot Supervisor is to provide technical leadership and direction to enable the repair and maintenance of the Seasonal equipment owned by Network Rail (NR). This is to ensure the availability of serviceable equipment to meet the operational plan.

As the Depot responsible person, you are instrumental to ensuring that the Depot is a safe environment to support maintenance activities and operational delivery.

What you'll be doing

As a Totton Depot Supervisor, your main responsibilities are as follows:

Engineering Compliance
  • Responsible for ensuring all maintenance activities and repairs are compliant to the relevant technical publications, policies and standards
  • Monitoring of equipment health to allow active intervention to eliminate in-service failures;
  • Monitoring of MPV Log books and quality Inspections
  • Conducting technical investigations and drafting of reports for safety critical or service affecting faults, to identify root cause and strategies to eradicate
  • Working with the Reliability Engineer to review failure data and propose strategies to prevent re-occurrence, sharing lessons learned within Balfour Beatty Rail Resource Management
  • Rostering of maintenance personnel to ensure the correct number of SQEP1 are available to support both the operational and maintenance plan;
  • Ensuring that the Depot has sufficient levels of technical equipment to deliver safe, efficient and compliant maintenance, fault diagnosis and rectification;
  • Ensure that consumables held on-site are of sufficient quantities to sustain the operational plan and maintenance activities;
  • Ensure that the FAMS stock holding is managed correctly and to proactively engage with NR to adjust stock levels to suit the demand;
  • People Management and Leadership;
  • To act as the first point of contact to your staff regarding HR matters, ensuring that the policies and procedures are adhered too;
  • To develop your subordinates to enhance their capabilities and identifying those with the potential to be future technical leaders;
  • To take time to technically Mentor and Coach your staff to reinforce and broaden their experience;
  • Actively involved in the recruitment and selection of maintenance personnel
  • Identified as the Depot Responsible Person to ensure that SHE policies and procedures are implemented and adhered too;
  • Coordinating and reporting of Depot infrastructure faults and scheduled maintenance events (NR & BBR);
  • Responsible for nominating the following Depot safety roles and ensuring their duties are being executed;
  • Depot First Aider
  • Depot Fire Warden
  • Safety Coach


Asset Management and Planning

  • Ensuring Seasonal assets are available to meet the operation plan and that utilisation levels are considered to maximise component health;
  • Responsibility to ensure that the Seasonal FAMS2 Maintenance plan is being adhered too; Financial Awareness
  • Ensuring that the Roster provides the required capability, but remains cost effective;
  • Ensuring all 3rd Party costs for repairs, services or materials are captured on the relevant fault form;
  • Availability of Seasonal equipment to deliver the Operational plan;
  • Availability of SQEP to fulfil the roster;
  • Occurrences of 'work-stops' due to insufficient Depot equipment or consumables


People Management and Leadership

  • Number of your Staff which have received a Development review Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE);
  • Number of Staff that have received Safety briefings;
  • Number of Depot inspections carried out;
  • Feedback from SHE Audits - number of NCR's and recommendations


Planning

  • Completion of in-season maintenance events vs FAMS plan;
  • Completion of out-of-season maintenance completed vs the agreed plan


Financial Awareness

  • No of technical queries or omissions relating to the Period Folder submission


Who we're looking for

The following qualities and experience are essential:

  • Hold the minimum Level 3 qualification in an appropriate engineering / mechanical discipline;
  • Proven ability to supervise personnel conducting maintenance and repair activities to the mandated publications and standards;
  • Knowledge of working within the Railway industry, within a Safety Critical role;
  • Must hold a Personal Track Safety (PTS) and Designated Person (DP) qualification ;
  • A proven track record in the implementation and adherence to SHE policies and procedures;
  • The use of Quality systems and LEAN methodology within the Engineering environment Skills;
  • Ability to articulate at all levels to ensure instructions, policies and procedures are understood;
  • The ability and vision to manage resources to formulate tactical and strategic plans to deliver equipment availability;
  • Supervise, mentor and coach members of staff to identify training and development needs;
  • PC literate and familiar with MS office, with the ability to draft technical reports;
  • The ability to establish and foster customer and supplier relationships to promote confidence, excellent communication with professional courtesy


Experience

  • Supervisory experience within an Engineering / Maintenance environment;
  • Experience working within an Engineering / Maintenance environment;
  • Demonstrable commitment to personnel / professional development


Desirables

  • Membership of a Profession Institution - Eng Tech status or working towards;
  • Hold a minimum Level 2 qualification in Management or Leadership;
  • IOSH qualification or equivalent qualification and experience;
  • FAW, Fire Warden and forklift driver.
