With its leading-edge technology, this highly innovative, international business now requires an experienced R&D Director to lead a rapidly growing team of software, electronic and mechanical engineers in developing electro-mechanical products and software solutions from concept to launch.

The Role:

Reporting to the CTO of the business, as the R&D Director, your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
  • introducing strong and technology focused leadership into an established but growing multi-disciplined Research & Development team
  • developing research and development methods, building the team further and leading the management of design across the product range
  • building and developing the capability of the team aligned to product and projects
  • responsibility for the technology used in the product portfolio as well as the compliance and certification of the product portfolio
  • delivering design related quality, performance and cost targets
  • contributing to the product strategy process across the business unit, including promoting lean and agile ways of delivering value
  • leading and developing the competencies within your team aligned to the long term strategy of the business
  • developing solutions to design challenges, with constraints on cost, quality and performance

This role would be suited to candidates with a strategic research and development background, with products relating to electro-mechanical applications.

The Candidate:

Ideally of graduate standard or higher, from within an engineering, mechanical or technical background, candidates for the R&D Director role will be required to demonstrate that they have:
  • had at least 5 to 10 years previous work experience in a senior research and development role, with a proven track record focused on electromechanical product and/ or software development
  • strong leadership capabilities and the ability to integrate and work effortlessly with other departments and specialisms within the business
  • experience in developing enterprise level desktop applications, web-based applications, web services and cloud hosted software
  • experience of working with agile teams or lean project management methodologies
  • previous experience with Jira and Confluence or similar
  • a high proficiency in MS Office applications including Project, Word, Excel and PowerPoint

For this R&D Director role, you should be an organised, pro-active individual with a professional outlook and positive "can-do" attitude. You should have excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as being confident at developing strong relationships both internally and externally.

Used to multi-tasking, you will require excellent attention to detail and have the ability to prioritise your workload. Candidates for the R&D Director role will also need the ability to motivate and inspire.

Able to work as part of a team or under your own initiative, you should be someone who can be flexible and thrives in a fast-paced, challenging environment. Candidates for the R&D Director role should be results driven with a determination to deliver to plan.
