ACORN is looking for a Remote Organiser to build power to fight for social and economic change in various towns and cities across the UK, to start work on 23rd August 2021.

ACORN is a mass membership organisation: a vehicle for collective action. By taking action on issues, we build the hopes, expectations and experience of our members and the communities they come from. Our organising is premised on two simple truths: problems affecting working class communities-from unhealthy, unaffordable and insecure housing, to cuts to public services-stem from a lack of power, and; the most effective means of building power is for people to get organised.

About the job

ACORN's success has seen an explosion of interest from people across the country wanting to set up their very own groups and branches. In order to capitalise on this enthusiasm, keep up with demand and turn the country ACORN red, we are recruiting a Remote Organiser to work alongside the existing National and Remote Organisers to support these nascent and non-staffed parts of the national organisation.

You will be the main staff contact for multiple unstaffed branches and groups nationwide. Your daily work will involve:

The foundation of new ACORN Groups across the country: taking interested people to membership, building a local organising committee, launching with a training day, being responsible for elements of the administrative setup of new Groups on our systems;
The ongoing training and support of multiple ACORN Groups (including some existing Groups) up until a staff Organiser is hired in their town or city. This includes supporting Groups to transition to Branches. This support typically includes: regular calls with Group committees, regular training session, on-call support for campaigns, helping to guide Groups through campaigns, and helping resolve any membership issues;
Working with other Remote and National Organisers on national campaigns to ensure the effective on-the-ground implementation of these campaigns.

ACORN will pay for your accommodation and travel and give you an allowance for food when you are staying overnight somewhere.


No formal qualifications are necessary. We're primarily looking for someone with a strong work ethic with good listening skills and the ability to motivate others.

Experience, skills and abilities

The successful applicant will have:

Strong experience in growing ACORN's membership
Strong experience in ACORN campaigns and member defence cases
Strong experience in leadership development in ACORN
The ability to coach and teach
The ability to motivate and manage a team of volunteers
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Excellent self-organisation
A solution-based approach to problem-solving
Supportive and approachable
A willingness to work multiple weekends per year, and travel on a regular basis
The ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment and be detail-oriented
A willingness to work sometimes long and irregular hours, including evenings and weekends (You will be on a flexi-time contract during which you will be expected to work 150 hours over any 4 week period. You will have to work multiple weekends and travel on a regular basis. Travel time to different Groups is included within your hours.)
A willingness and enthusiasm for knocking on doors and talking to strangers year-round

In turn, ACORN is committed to investing in the continued professional development of our organising staff. Training and support will include:

First week: ACORN Foundations of Community Organising training (5 days)
During probation: Weekly 1:1 management supervision; daily recruitment practice with fellow organising staff; weekly group team call; on-call daily management support.
After probation: bi-weekly 1:1 management supervision; daily recruitment practice with fellow organising staff; weekly group team call; on-call daily management support.
Ongoing continuing professional development opportunities where identified.


£18,000 starting salary.
